Hi is anyone growing this tree here in W.A and if so has it set fruit. I have one small tree about 2metres tall and its flowered for the second year in a row but has failed to set any fruit. Not sure if it needs a second one or a particular insect to pollenate it.

Its a native tree that I believe is from over east. I was hoping some one from WA might have one growing and had some luck. By the response I would say no.

If you need a pollinator it grows in the hills around here, can send you plenty of seeds at certain times of the year.

I read on wikipedia that it is protogynous, not sure if this is true or if I really need two plants.

Look at the thread titled Tropical fruit trees successfuly grown in Sydney/wollongong/newcastle - Dated8 June 2009, You will see that Happy Earth in wollongong has a superior strain of the black apple. I havent seen his name pop up for a long time. Perhaps someone can track him down for his superior seeds.

No worries buddy, will check to see if they are around in the hills here. From memory they fruit in summer. And I think you've been more than generous already

I just checked Wikipedia (not Google) - they fruit from Sept to November.... I'll gather some for you then Sternus. I've seen them germinating on cement paths as long as they're kept damp, an easy one to grow.
