False Spring (forum)

It should be autumn but the trees that were baring their branches are now shooting new leaves. Spring flowers are blooming and even my pawpaw seeds sprouted on a 29 degree day. I am worried about what would happen when the 'real' weather arrives.

Nick, crazy weather is busting out all over. After my 1400+ mm for march and sweltering conditions a dry, wintery week and a half culminated in a brisk 17c this morning and 10c on parts of the Atherton Tableland.

Hey MaryT - this happened to us late last autumn also...most of my stone fruit flowered - no fruiting though. I was surprised as I still got a very decent flowering come spring.. :-)
We are still due quite warm weather also - and I am dying to get my veg garden going :-(

Amanda, thanks for that information. Good to know that the trees will snap back to season without harm. I wish I have a veg garden :(

We are back to 38oC next week too....and my veg garden was to be planted out this w/end MaryT :-(
I have put up a huge shade sail for my patch this winter...the sun can reach the plants but only at the lower, more gentle, angles of the morning and afternoon.
Maybe this winter I can grow some pak choi etc without it bolting to seed 2 weeks after planting!!? :D

At last it's cooler in Sydney. Can't imagine the heat in WA. I'm ready to hibernate :) but at least we had a taste of summer last week if it was VERY LATE.

Temps here are exceptionally average (20-31c) but unusually for this time of year it has hardly rained for a week and a half and humidity is low.I planted about 40m2 of a large variety of vegies in a patchwork pattern.I hope I didn't jump the gun as it could go monsoonal again.

Fingers crossed Mike. I'm glad you had reasonable weather to work in. Looking forward to hearing of results about the patchwork garden. 40m2 is a lot of vegetables!

Mary I have lost my enthusiasm for wheelbarrowing wet heavy soil. There is only 3m3 with a 30m to 40m slalom course on each trip but after digging the garden as well the last 0.5m3 is going slow.I'm repairing erosion areas and creating places for paw paws and gingers.I could use some cool overcast weather.
Hopefully the vegies will be ok and I'll replace any casualties. There will be more than I can eat unless there is extreme weather or a plague of locusts.

And I thought you would have gone fishing, Mike. I bow to you for moving and turning all that soil. Took me four days to shift one cubic metre of dry potting mix on level concrete ten paces away but at least my neighbour has her car space back.

Mary Easter is the worst time for fishing and camping due to crowds being at all the good spots. It is rough on the sea with a full moon so it is poor for fishing and the creek fish like bream, flathead and mullet are not as good as reef fish.In the next few weeks I'll have an overnight trip to the reef.
I was motivated to get the soil done quickly but my 'get up and go' got up and went.

Mike are you planting by the moon? You seem to be in sync with that but maybe it's time for rest after what you have done.

I think that is lunacy when it comes to plants.Switched on people I know swear by it but it is a bit twilight zone for me.
As the tides are bigger and there is more light at night fish catch rates are reduces.I suppose predaotrs can see better just like on land where lions, leapards etc hunt on the full moon.Prey is often more restless on or near full moons.

More like the fishing is no good so might as well work in the garden? :) One way or another we move with nature.

I have heard a few people say we are forgetting and should be getting back to the true and original meaning of Easter. For thousands of years all over the place it has been the time of the northern spring equinox fertility. The goddess Eostre (the goddess whose name became easter) would certainly approve of he giving and eggs and rabbits as symbols, boozing and I suppose engaging in all sorts of activities associated with fertility.

They interviewed people in the street asking them how they would feel if there's no chocolate eggs for Easter and one guy said "then it'd just be religious!" Anyway here in Sydney we are definitely in Autumn - no spring chicks, no new bunnies but the boozing and chocolate mania is in full force.

Autumn is finally here - this morning the air is crisp, the sun is shinning in a cloudless sky. The mixed salad seeds I'd sown on Thursday have all sprouted - how good is that?

We are very lucky for sure MaryT :) My veg patch is all ready to go and I have two recycled flywire sliding doors put into an "A" frame (ends covered) for growing my Gai Lan and Japanese spinach in...hopefully the flywire will keep the bugs out..
At least we are getting heavy dew - that's better than a poke in the eye with a banana..!? :D
