Dolly starts with ...
Hi, Can anyone tell me how good the flavour of the Glenn mango is? Say on a scale of 1 to 10 with Florigon being the best and R2E2 being the worst.

I agree, r2e2 is not the best but its got to be a 7. And size does count, that's worth another 2 so its at least a 9 ! :)

I know taste is subjective, but 9 for R2E2? Really??? Other common ones like KP, Calypso and Honeygold have much more flavour, no turps factor, and would be off the scale in comparison. Maybe the R2E2 sent interstate are the premium ones, coz the ones sold locally are pushing 5/10. (Sorry, just my 2cents worth ;) )

Personally I also don't like R2E2. I'll rate them only 2/10 and that just for its big size, for me it taste like turpentine specially when they are fully ripe..

I like Calypso and KP, but my top favorite is Alphonse/Alphonso which I used to eat all the time in my original country before coming to Australia, I really miss it here.. I'll rate Alphonse 9/10... Daleys do list it but never had it in stock... I'm hoping one day Australia will start producing Alphonse.

As per as Glenn is concerned, I've yet to taste it, currently I'm growing Glenn tree in pot and it has now 2 fruits so hopefully they will grow to full size and I'll be able taste them (one out of two fruit is stopped growing at golf ball size and not getting any bigger since last 1 month or so)..

I've never tasted turps in an r2e2 b4...it's a kent seedling I thought? There were tonnes of them in the shops this season (in WA anyway) although - how and where a fruit is grown can have a big impact on taste IMHO. The soil, climate, fert's etc...eg: we always find the Carnarvon KP's way better/superior to the ones from Darwin and the Ord area...

R2E2 has no turps for a southerner, high sugar fruits taste like regurgitated foods to us anyway Lol. I honestly find there to be next to no difference between kp and r2e2, calypso is too sweet and looses points for that. Then again teeth dissolving half ripe plums get me and most temperate climate folk pretty excited. Alphonso has a nice flavour but I dunno, the "manilla" variety in mexico is pretty good, in the end mango is a mango, great fruit but its still in the end an overly sweet tropical fruit and not touching a good apricot or cherry for flavour no matter the variety. Actually I prefer figs to anything else as far as super sweet fruits go

Amanda, I agree with the comment re NT mangos - their KP's have a bit of a washed out flavour compared to local Qld grown. Wonder if they over-irrigate?

Hi all,

I don't like R2E2 very much either. They have been advertising them recently with the information that they have a small seed (no mention of flavour...).
However I am growing Glenn and got the first fruit last month. It was luscious and sweet, no turps at all, I really liked it (kids ate nearly all of it but I got a taste). Not a huge fruit but the seed was a bit smaller than KP as a proportion. I don't know if that is typical.

R2E2 is pretty bland and calypso doesn't quite have the flavour of a bowen.Honey gold is pretty good and very sweet.3 new KP crosses will be released thi year...2 monos and one poly.The poly is a cracker and I have forgotten its name.....mmm..maybe 1201.The two mono are quite striking in a calypso kinda way.Those pesky plant breeding rights means that anyone attempting to grow the poly, won't be able to sell them commercially without paying royalties.

I can admit calypso and honey gold (I tasted this one a few years back and haven't seen it since, it was good), those two are a different thing but KP/bowen aren't different enough to be arguing over. But choosing between them I'd say r2e2 is the better, this discussion is leading me to believe that r2e2 must travel and ripen better in a commercial situation because as you know there are no tree fresh mangos down here! And its been a long time since I've tasked a fresh one

That's a bit unfair Jason!? :-( We get loads of fresh mangoes all the way from Darwin - and we are near the bottom of WA! We usually get R2E2, Calypso, KP's and some Honey Golds (they are good too - personally I wouldn't like anything sweeter than them tho...it would get get sickly sweet for me...)

It gets back to personal taste again I guess...some folks don't like any hint of sour or tart in their fruit - and others like it. A bit the apples they are breeding today and such...some folks love Pink Ladies...but others find them too sweet and lacking in that "apple" character/taste...(including me :)

(but yes - R2E2 is known to be a good traveller..)

Well apples are another story, all apples are somewhat sweet but for commercial reasons (expected colour) they are picked a couple months immature. Granny smith is the classic example, its picked half mature and green and sour. But really granny smith is a yellow apple and medium sweet when its ripe but its traditional market is a green unripe cooking apple. Pink lady isn't any sweeter than granny smith I would say. Fuji and royal gala are sweeter though. Golden delicious is sweet to but its at the point of being too sweet for me, I dont/cant stand to eat them. I eat plums semi crunchy because I'm always challenging parrots to see who can eat the fruit first so I've ended up preferring fruit unripe :). I've been eating apples for a few week all ready and they are only 50% grown

I have a Glenn Condo Mango tree.
The taste of the fruit is different to R2E2 and the other mangoes.
Its very sweet and a bit milder.
