Mangosteen (queen of the fruit)

I happen to be a distributor of mangosteen juice, but I wish this wonderful fruit from S.E Asia would grow south of Darwin & the Daintree, but to my knowledge it wont. I know there are plantations everywhere up there, because people rang me after the hurricane 2 or 3 years back, trying desperately to sell tonnes of mangosteens blown from the trees. This was when bananas went from $2.50 a kilo to $15.
I just wonder if anyone has had any success further south?

Wow, thats quite a bit south isnt it?
I know that up there they only get one crop a year becuse its too dry in winter whereas in Thailand & Vietnam its always 2 crops. The locals celebrate on both occasions!

Yeah like noni (which is also good for your health) mangosteen trees need that truly tropical season yearround to produce really good fruit so dont be tempted much south of Daintree! They can take 10 years to start to produce & grow to 50 ft & long lived.

I purchased a small one from Cairns a few month ago. Its in a self watering pot and it has survived this much of winter quite nicely. I dont much expect it to survive, but if it does get through its first winter, who knows?

Good luck with your mangosteen BJ. You will need to nurse it quite a lot.I am visiting Darwin soon & cant wait to see mangosteen trees for real as I have been drinking the juice for nearly 7 years & tasted only rubbish fruit from Vic supermarkets.

Want a true taste sensation? Mangosteen fruit for sale at Bunbury farmers market & they are fresh not like the safeway rubbish in Vic.
2 fruit for $3 but dont try to eat the rind ( pericarp) thats where most of the anti-inflammatories are but very astringent. You can dry & powder it though as its excellent for sores ulcers skin complaints etc.

Hey snottie aren't farmers supposed to sell their own produce at these farmers markets? Does that mean someone is growing mangosteen down near you?

Hey thats a very good point,Jantina. They cannot be from Australia because the Darwin trees have just finished flowering. Usually all F M produce has a sign saying which region it was grown in(mostly WA) I will make a point in checking & let you know.

Ive got mangosteen seedlings from 700m alt in Bali
They have continued to grow through a townsville winter

also Noni is a lot tougher than mangosteen
They really do thrive in Townsville, there are many trees that overhand footpaths and nobody seems to pick it up
and i have seen noni growing in a sheltered spot in brisbane

i *Think* there is a true mangosteen in Anderson gardens too, cant be absolutely sure. theres the yellow mangosteen i know, but a smaller tree nearby looks lke the real thing

Rev, you lucky so & so. You have a ready made medicine chest so absolutely no reason to ever be sick. Noni is so good for the immune system, but unlike mangosteen it doesnt taste nice.it is hardier than mangosteen but I still couldnt save one tree in my Victorian polyhouse during winter.

Rev says...
So how do i use the noni?

and if all the mangosteen is used for is the rind, no problem
more rind than fruit in NQ fruit!

ive been reading up on Mangosteen micropropagation, its seems feasible with this apomictic crop

if you want manggis go to bali!
top quality like you will neverf fined here!
about 0.40 - 6.0 $/kg depending how far you are from the mountains
