I also have a page where you can search for recent updates about the fruit trees you are interested in

http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/myedibles/

Eg: Nectarine:

http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/myedibles/fruit/nectarine/

I haven't got the ability to narrow down to states yet but it's coming soon :)

Nice idea Corey - i think this would be great on a suburb basis, but i have real concerns about privacy issues here. One can browse their suburb and pinpoint the exact address where fruit trees have been sold.

I notice all the fruit tree i have purchased in the past are linked to my home address and displayed on google maps- without my consent.

Maybe this data should only be displayed if your customers give consent? How can someone remove data from displaying on your google maps page?

Hi Anonymous.... I will randomise the map positioning of these details to within 1km so that you can't pinpoint the address.

I haven't made it public or added links except through this forum so far to get exactly the feedback you guys are giving me.

Jimmy:
Yep I will add that link for you.

Once I have the randomised address details on the maps would you be willing to put in a real address?

Woh that is a huge list of plants your growing. I can't wait to see some pictures Rich :)

I like how you filled out a lot of the other info too like Height, water given and pruning and edible status.

Was there a reason why you didn't fill out the fruiting months on them all?

Just this info would be great for people to be able to use to search in the future so maybe I am not promoting it enough?

Hi Correy,

Pictures to come soon. Most of my fruit trees are less than two years old and haven't fruited yet - i'll update their fruiting months once when they start to bear fruit.

This will be a great resource in the future!

Privacy has now been added to the myedible maps. ( was more difficult then I first thought but done now )

If you go to your my edibles page (the one that the public can see eg: Correys My Edible Page you will notice that your location has been purposely thrown out by a km or so.

This way people really only know which suburb you are from rather then your exact address which I hope allows anonymous people to feel safe about contributing to their my edibles page without feeling that people know exactly where they live.

The reason for the map I feel is that growing fruit trees is very location specific. What fruits well in Woolloongabba for me may not fruit well 50km away in ipswich for example.

So when you use the map if you can see that someone near you is having luck with a certain fruit and you can look at how they look after it with fertiliser, sun position and pruning and what time of the year they are getting fruit off it then you can use this information to either 1 get yourself a similar tree or if you have a similar variety see what you are doing wrong.

Can I get some feedback off you guys on privacy after this recent update?

I added your home page button on the right:
http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/4232/

Recent Updates:
Privacy: Everyones point on the map is now shifted by about a km. ( Waiting on feedback from you guys)

Latest Updates - The Myedibles Updates page now only displays one plant per orchard on the home page:

http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/myedibles/

Layout: - I have tried my best to take advantage of peoples large screen sizes. So if you look at my page:

http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/1441/

Because I have a wide screen I can see 4 plants in one row but people with smaller screens might only see about 2 plants.

====================
Working on next:
- Fixing up the error in internet explorer under person information
http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/my/
The browse button to upload a general picture of yourself doesn't appear.

- Modifying the alert after you add an image that it will upload in the background (Happy Earth)

- Modifying the way the forum sends out email updates. So if you have commented on lots of topics you will only get 1 email rather then 1 for each forum topic you have commented in.

- Contacting more people to ask them to become part of My Edibles

Privacy: I did this anyway out of common sense. Hopefully it wont adjust 1km back in the right direction :)

Layout, Vast improvement, a lot better for widescreen.

I would agree with the image name being added somewhere after you browse. First time I uploaded the same image twice not realising that they accumulate.

Hi Amanda:

You don't technically have to put in an exact address but the map experience is not going to be anywhere near as useful or exciting if everyone just gave suburbs.

Otherwise there would be hundreds of orchards right in the center of town.

You can of course put in a fake address. But hopefully not too far away because the people who gain the most from your experience are those nearest you.

Likewise if someone near you puts in their correct address then you will be able to gain a lot more by knowing that their rainfall/frosts/sun etc are all similar to your own and then you can both benefit from each others fruiting endeavours while still remaining anonymous.

In your specific scenario of the only property within 1km then you might like to choose another address close by.

Correy - see above 2. I really don't think a specific address is necessary. For eg: if u live in Mandurah, WA - then that is all that is needed? Perhaps if individuals who want to get in touch for a street address can do so themselves?

I am very keen to post my edibles - but not if I have to post a street address (or that of my neighbours - who I know within a km radius)

Hi Amanda.

Privacy options are totally up to you.

Please feel free to put any address you like in geraldton or even a nearby suburb. Your displayname can be anything you choose as well so you can be as anonymous as you like.

You will need to use the same email address as you do on the forum so that your My Edibles comes up under your "About the author" on the forum.

I would love to see your orchard. As you have given some great advise on the forum to date.

Hi Correy,

I would have to agree with Amanda by doing the addressing based just on suburb level. Even in heavily populated areas where their maybe lots of orhards, I dont think it matters if you have to group them all together e.g there are 270 fruit trees growing in Brisbane CBD - from our perspective we just want to know what other people have and havent grown succesfully in the same climate. Suburbs in nearly all cases would have very similar climates.

Keep up the great work though - this is going to be a fantastic resource.

Hey Correry,

Suggetsion for you: Maybe include a climate section in each person profile that lists things like type of climate, frost, rainfall, min/max/ave temperature etc.

Hope this helps,

Hi HappyEarth.

I am trying to get this information under personal information in the section:
About your Orchard
You will notice that if you click in this box it prompts you to write about:

- A bit about yourself.
- Soil type
- Annual rainfall
- Aspect of your orchard
- Your biggest challenge
- Your rewards
- Websites Use the link button
- Books and periodicals.

Your orchard is truly amazing. I am surprised that you can grow guavas without pest control.

Amanda + HappyEarth.

Privacy: I have changed it so you can now enter only a suburb.

If you don't enter anything in the address field it will say:

.... Just One More Thing
- Enter your Full Street Address, only your Suburb is displayed publicly and the position on the map is randomly moved by 1km to add privacy. If you are still concerned just enter your suburb.

The privacy now reads:
Personal Details & Privacy
- Only your displayName and Suburb are shown publicly.
- Your orchard will be plotted randomly about 1km from your house to ensure privacy.

========
Using google maps is amazing to search peoples orchards nearby. If I can get some accurate information I believe this tool will be great and fun.

I put many hours into that map hey :)
