Paw Paw tree

Hi,

I know this topic does exist...but i was wondering if can you help me out....my mum has grow two paw paw trees and her friend told her both of her tree is a male so she should drop it off.

I've attached the pictures for your feed back.

And if it's a male tree...could you kindly please advise where can i get a dwarf paw paw tree in Perth. As i've been searching around and no luck.

I would be grateful for your advice.

Thank you very much for help!

They are not males but hermaphrodites that have smaller flowers than females. The trees look healthy but many of the bisex types are tropical reds and do fruit as freely in cooler or less humid conditions. It looks like iot may be a bit shadey for them.I would fertilise them plenty and if the fdruit don't come soon chop them off at 1.5m and see if the resprouting shoots do better.

He`s a bloody genius,thats why!
I agree with Mike about the trees being in shade because the trunks should be thicker for the height they are!
Lauren, Bunnings ( Busso) sell bi-sex papayas in the spring but its doubtful now! Havent seen or heard of dwarf ones.
Maybe you could start some from seed now & they will be a reasonable size to stand the winter in pots either inside or greenhouse! Papayas germinate very easily!

good question John, I've wondered the same myself, I mean when you have a look at his back yard it hardly seems big enough to have all he says he has. But if he says he has he has... never seen one photo from him tho

People can take it or leave so far as my contribution goes.If you disagree challenge it or check it.Jujube is the only one from this forum who has been to my place and inspected what I have.I will be putting in a few more trees yet and it is surprising how much you can fit into around 1000m2 of planting space. My 85+ trimmed trees take up only around half of this. I have put my name on this forum before and people can google it.I won't say what my qualifications are but I never tke pictures any more in spite of doping it semi-professionally for many years.

JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE says...
I can confirm with you guys that Mike 's garden is full of rare and unsual fruit trees, herbs and root vegies (the best of the best I must say). It is a paradise for tropical fruit lovers.

I have been to the garden twice and I didnot know which direction I should go when I first arrived because soooo many interesting things I wanted to see at once. I want to visit the garden again because every time I go, apart from the permanent trees there are always areas with new rare trees and new vegies. I have learnt lots from Mike in term of managing fruit trees and herbs the smart way. I have applied Mike 's method to mine but still more need to be done

Well done Mike.

I agree with snottiegobble!

It is not in the size that matters, it is how we use it!

I have a backyard of 200 sqm and it is filled with the plants I want to have!

Have been utilising the front yard too! Will another grafted Longan tree by early next month when new arrives from Qld!

Cheers!

If most of the world did more intensive gardening like us nobody should starve!
Broadacre, monoculture, beef, sheep & huge dairy farms only feed the lucky ones!

ngf, there are male, female & a mixture of both in some trees! Do you happen to have the labels because they would tell you if bisexual? I imagine to transplant successfully you would have to either lop of the top & part of the trunk to lessen shock or do a gradual root trim by first digging a trench around the base & working inwards to end up with a ball of roots & soil that can be wrapped in hessian for tranplanting, yeah I know its difficult with our sand, & it needs to be done in winter!

Is she pregnant? My female pawpaw has developed a bulge after flowering - is it fruit? There must be a male lurking somewhere in our neighbourhood :)

grub you can have some of our hot weather; it's so hot and humid in Sydney right now... it took a few weeks for the flower to turn into this little 'lump'; goodness know when it will become an edible fruit, if ever.

Very funny, chillilover - I hope she does not abort. The mysterious donor remains out of sight, but I am grateful. Having just one female is a bit nerve wrecking and I was going to give it up but now I'll wait and see if the fruit is viable.

There must be a male or even a bisexual plant somewhere close by. Good luck. Try and save some seeds from this one and see if you can get more growing.
