Hi,

I have ordered a vanilla plant. I was thinking of putting it in a large pot in orchid potting mix, with a pole to climb on in the pot, in the bathroom. The larger bathroom in my house would be best I think, as it is in the middle of the house with pretty constant temperature and no drafts (and steam of course), but it has a skylight with a silver foil tube directing sunlight in, rather than a window. Would this be enough light for the orchid?

Thanks very much,

Diana.

Hi Dianna,

My vine has been happily in the guest bathroom with light from the window facing East all year round, it has a ducted heating point. It is not as bright as it should be and there is no problem there.

Vanila orchid vine grows under the capony of a tree so I suspect they don't need much light.

Good luck with your vine. I think yours will have enough light

Thanks, Jujube.

It sounds like they take 3 years to start flowering, and they get quite big. I don't have any other indoor plants, so I'm looking forward to it.

Hi Jujube,

Do you have a picture of your indoor vanilla orchid? I would be interested to see the set-up.

Thanks,

Hi Diana,

I have grown the vine from a cutting since Jan 2009. I have not set it up properly yet and have not thought about doing it because it is still very small. You could see it is quite dark in the bathroom. I never thought that vanila orchid could survive in Melbourne and obviously, I am wrong.

Thanks for the picture, Jujube.

That's good to know. I have mine now, about the same size as that. What a lovely looking plant, it's so rigid and unblemished that it reminds me of a plastic aquarium ornament.

They seem quite slow-growing then.

I grow mine in our bathroom as well. It's in a pot full or orchid mix & grows up a wire obelisk. Every week, I feed it with orchid fertiliser (the growth one...there's a different one for flowering). The window faces north & the room gets quite warm, so with it's daily spray of water, it stays nice & humid (I keep it out of direct sunlight, though). I've only had it for a month or two but you can almost watch it growing - it's put on a huge amount of growth since I got it. It'll be interesting to see if we ever get any flowers off it.

I found this link on another forum page on this website http://www.herbalistics.com.au/shop/ they sell vanilla so it might be a good point to start off with.

They also have vanilla growing in the greenhouse at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne so you might be able to get a cutting from the vine they have (as long as no one is looking).

Good luck

I just bought a good sized vanilla vine today down at my local farmer's market and a chocolate tree too. The vanilla is a good score and I'm feeling hopeful that it will grow as long as we spoil it a bit through Perth summer. Eep. I suspect the Theobroma will end up being a non-fruiter.

Hi everyone, I realise this forum hasn’t been commented on in many years. I just recently bought a vanilla orchid from Diggers, it’s smaller than I expected (one leaf and it it is about $0.10 big). Anywho, I live in Perth and am wondering how to best take care of this little one. I am really excited to try growing it. I’ve seen someone post a video that they should be kept in their original pots and dug slightly into the ground and grown up a tree. Then I’ve heard other people say it’s best to re-pot them and and grow them up a stake. I think our back yard receives mostly easterly sun maybe north easterly... but I’m not exact. I’ve a very established frangipani in the back yard which I could grow it up where it will be shaded by the tree over summer, but would the autumn and winter sun here be too strong? I guess I really need some help, I really want this plant to thrive but don’t know how to help it!
