War of the Currants (forum)

4 responses

Tommoz starts with ...
I am tossing up between black, red and white currant.

On flavour alone (based on juices and ice-blocks I've tasted) I am leaning towards getting a black currant.

I have read that white currants are sweeter and also remain camouflaged from birds. Although how do you know when it is ripe?

Then there is the jostaberry (black currant x gooseberry). Is this as big as diggers claim (3x3)?

Edit: Yes they are all demanding of high-chill. The currants at my local nursery produce fruit, although that could be because they were transported in from Flemings.

Chris says...
Black currants need min. 800 but more like 1000-1200 chill hrs.
Elevated areas of Tasmania and southern Victoria but zero chance in Sydney. My plants are 8yrs without a berry.
Don't know about jostaberry.

Boris Spasky says...
Those clever kiwis have developed low chill blackcurrant varieties (in the 600-800 range).
