Hi all, does anyone know what this bug is at all?
I have never seen one b4 and probably wouldn't notice it except it was on my loungeroom floor (that was washed the day b4..) have no idea where it came from..??
It was squishy feeling - but the "skin" was tough.

I have floorboards thruout - but will google thanks. Any other ideas?
It reminded me of a mutant slater?? I wonder what slater larvae look like anyway....
I don't mind bugs at all..but finding it on my floor was a bit off-putting...I have bad memories of squishing maggots underfoot in a dark kitchen, thanks to a dead rat in the wall...urgghhh...gotta love the tropics n old queenslanders...not.

Ok - i have another one...I can't find this in my weed book..it's obviously not friendly...I have never seen it, let alone on the block b4 - but found it (2day) close to where I dump my manures, mulch etc (so it's probably an import..)
Also - is it maybe a declared weed?
Many thanks!

Hi,
That looks like something we call "double g"Don`t know the real name. They bite and spread, the spikes stick to ya and pop up every where. They break into 3-4 segments. The trick is to destroy before it sets flower and seed. Nasty little sucker.

I have a big jelly palm if you want seeds amanda. Didn't think of making wine - I got loads of fruit this year.
Bit disappointed in the eating quality - a lot of seed and not much flesh, and a bit tart for my taste. Though I haven't been very careful with fertilisers - a good feed might improve the fruit.

Amanda, thet weed youv'e got there is Caltrop (Tribulus terrestris-
Zygophyllaceae).
They grow in the warmer months especially if you get a bit of rain
to kick them along, but they're very drought hardy, with a long taproot.
I've got 25acres of themand beleive me Amanda, you dont want it to get away on you!

Any ideas on what this larvae might turn into? We found busy boring a tunnel in the heartwood of a dead acacia we chopped down. My daughter took it for show n tell at school and I would like to be able to tell them what happens next...
It's in the bug catcher now and appears to be spinning web for something. I gather it's a borer - but I have never seen such a huge beast b4!?
Thanks!

Thanks - just googled that John Mc - it is a witchetty grub! They can turn into a moth or a beetle. I guess we will have to hope it doesn't die - to find out which one!? maybe the web is a cocoon. And we do get those huge moths on the block.
It was a metre up in the trunk - couldn't see any kind of entry site...the wood is as hard n heavy as stone - must have great jaws.. I wonder how they 'breathe' in there...how old it is..etc.

Hi amanda & John Mc,
I have only tried them on the bbq, they were yum. Sort of like a soft 'burger ring':-) They were still in my grapefruit tree but I now have them under control, I think.
Haven't tried witchetty grubs raw tho.

It's a moth larvae.
longicorn beetle larvae look a bit different and aren't as big as that, and dont taste as good.
If I found that, I'd eat it without hesitation.
best cooked,
raw they're ok but most people wouldn't like the texture raw an I find it kind of stings the back of my throat.
But cooked, they're a good food and I think most poeple if they can get past the 'yuk' idea
of eating a grub, would find them enjoyable.
fatty/oily, nutty, and there's a definite flavour that you only get from moth larvae,
scrambled eggwhite sort of texture usually with a bit of undigested sawdust.
they're delicious
roll them in the hot ashes (not coals- too hot)or at home, under the griller or in a slightly greased pan.
A good hangover cure... ;-)
