This tropical tree, native to SE Asia is very popular for its extremely fragrant flowers and weeping branches. The green yellow flowers first appear in early autumn, gradually changing to orange over their long flowering season. Warm and humid conditions produce the most fragrance. The essential oil is distilled from the attractive flowers. Its qualities are said to be antiseptic, aphrodisiac and a tonic to the nervous system. The tree prefers a well drained soil in a sunny protected position with a minimum of 15 degrees.

This pleasant citronella smelling shrub has insect repellant qualities. Reputed to be a mosquito repellent. Just rub the leaves on the skin for temporary relief from mozzies. Essential oils can also be distilled from the leaves, with up to 1.7% of essential oil yield from fresh weight leaf. The essential oil contains citronellal, an aromatic compound renowned for repelling insects.In the garden the shrub is ideal for use as a low hedge plant, or as an ornamental specimen.
