Markmelb says... I have an air layered Jackfruit in Melb in its 3rd year (dont know variety) - it started losing leaves outside as winter progressed last year then brought inside to a sunny west window - has regrown back well over summer and it came inside again start of may and is growing well this time - dont think i will get any fruit but you never know - it thinks its in a rainforest understory inside :) | About the Author Markmelb , 29th June 2014 8:10am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... According to davesgaden.com Bowen mango is cold hardy to -1.1c (at that temp tree would be badly damaged and killed) and jackfruit is hardy to -3.8c. I have no problem growing mango, all my mango trees are doing fine now. I know that it is not easy to grow jackfruit, actually I am quite surprised that jackfruit is more cold hardy than mango (according to davesgaden)!!? Melbourne temperature rarely goes below 0 anyway, doesn't it? @markmelb Wow, it is great to hear that your jackfruit live thru winter. I have read somewhere that jackfruit produces fruit in its 4th year ussualy, it may takes more years in cooler climate since trees stop growing in winter. Thanks markmelb, I think I will give it try and see how many jackfruit I can killed in the process... The next question is what kind of jackfruit to grow ...? I am not worried about the taste, the main concern is getting jackfruit survive thru winter. Any suggestions? | About the Author Thithi Deer park 29th June 2014 5:22pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... I dont have a clue what variety mine is - but there is a more southern cold tolerant one that I think Daleys has - mine likes it inside where it doesnt get below 13.5c and still shows some growth - someone must know which Jak may grow the farthest south on this forum ??? I think anything below 5c will kill top growth - dont believe Dave?? | About the Author Markmelb , 29th June 2014 6:50pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Hi markmelb, Could u tell me how tall is your jackfruit, and how big is the pot? Does it like a lot of sun? how did it cope with the last year heat of above 40c? How big your tree trunk? Are you going plant the tree in the ground in future? My plan is to find the most suitable spot for jackfruit in the garden and plant it there and protect seedling over the winter and I also grow a lot of seedlings in pots indoor. If the one in the garden died over the winter, I 'd replace it with one of the seedlings that I grow indoor and I keep doing that until one is matured enough to go through winter or until I run out of seedling. What do you think about my plan? Mission impossible? | About the Author Thithi Deer park 29th June 2014 11:07pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... Mine was about 1.7m last year and has been cut back to 1.5 above its 430mm pot - trunk one inch diam - handled heat well but is in a semi shaded area and gets 10 -11am sun and afternoon low set sun - may put in more shaded area next summer - I have seen young Jaks in Bali in understory of cacao and other rainforest trees so dapply shade good - as for ground planting - try next to a black concrete driveway with a solid brick wall behind facing north - and electric soil heating for the coldest nights ?? did you check Daley plants - none in stock only seedlings but ask them anyway re that Picone?

Thithi says... Thanks markmelb. Nice tree that you have. I don't have a concrete driveway at the back of my house. I think I may put it at the corner close to the fences to protect it from the wind. I did try to gather info about different type of jackfruit varieties. Cochin, mongtong, black gold, gold nugget are those which can be pruned to keep them at about 2-3m. I guess the varieties that are chosen by Australia must be more cold hardy. All varieties listed on daleys are very sensitive to frost (including yullatin which Daley says to be cold tolerant. Can a tree be cold tolerant and very sensitive to frost also?! | About the Author Thithi Deer park 2nd July 2014 6:10am #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... Thithi - I have a few Daleys plants noted as sensitive on their tags like Jaboticaba and Mango and coffee do ok but the jackfruit although tough looking must have a really sensitive cambium - try putting yours next to a big water tank and setting six large dark pavers around base - let me know if you find that cold tolerant grafted one and order on for me please :) | About the Author Markmelb , 2nd July 2014 8:25am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... It could take between 3-8 months from flowering to mature fruit depending on jackfruit varieties. Unfortunately I don't know which varieties would take 3 months, which ones would takes 8 months. The shorter the time it takes from flowering to mature fruit, the better chance that I would have a ripe edlbe jackfruit if I manage to grow 1 in melbourne. Does any know the time required for any jackfruit variety from flower to mature jackfruit? | About the Author Thithi Deer park 2nd July 2014 1:29pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Really. Wow, that's good news. I will try to get black gold seeds and germinate them ( I suspect a lot of them would die before I found out how to protect jackfruit tree better in winter) I think I wil buy jackfruit fruits to eat, germinate seeds. Buying grafted jackfruits from daleys would cost a lot (i dont have that much money :-) hihi) and I think seedlings are tougher than grafted one. | About the Author Thithi Deer park 4th July 2014 10:45am #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... Thithi - I have no idea how your going to source BlackGold fruit -- cheaper to get a grafted plant than drive up to Queensland and drive around for 2 weeks looking for that fruit - as most if not all Jacks you buy dont have their name attached unless purchased from grower - then there is the 2 years to get it up to a plantable size here in Melbourne good luck :) | About the Author Markmelb , 4th July 2014 11:56am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Asian market always sell jackfruits when they are in season which should be around jan to march? The one in footscray don't label what variety of jackfruit :( a fruit and veg shop in highpoint does label varieties of their fruits. Last year I bought a few different mangoes from the shop in highpoint e2r2,kp, nam doc Mai, elephant mango, Keitt.. I dont usually shop in footscray or highpoint but I will in the coming jan | About the Author Thithi Deer park 4th July 2014 5:05pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Hi mark, I think I read in somewhere that jackfruit seedlings grow faster than grafted ones. Seedlings may take 3 years while graft trees take 4 years to fruit. Trees grown from seed are a bit more cold hardy than air layered ones. The advantages of grafted jackfruits are fruits taste the same as parent trees, trees are not that tall as seedlings which are not really my main concerns. I have never had a bad jackfruit yet. If my jackfruit tree survive, become too tall, I will buy a grafted one from Daley .. :-) at least by then I know how to grow a jackfruit tree. Oh my god you really don't know how many trees I managed to kill in the past few years!!! | About the Author Thithi Deer park 4th July 2014 5:42pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Jackfruit is in season now. Just bought 2 varieties of jackfruit fruits today. Unfortunately I don't know the names of the jackfruits. The shop in highpoint labels varieties of everything except for jackfruits. The shop in footscray labels theirs as jackfruit Nghe. Anyway I got 35 seeds in total. I will try to grow all of them :-) | About the Author Thithi Deer park 6th July 2014 3:10pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

VF says... Hi Thithi, what were the fruit like, soft or crisp? Just asking because I've found the crisp varieties seem to be more tender to cold as seedlings than the soft fleshed ones. This may not be an absolute rule, but it's what I've experienced, but once they get to maybe about 2 ft, they do become more resilient. | About the Author VF Wongawallan 7th July 2014 8:05am #UserID: 6795 Posts: 736 View All VF's Edible Fruit Trees |

Thithi says... Just an update on my jackfruit seedlings. The seedlings are about 5cm high, I bring out 2 seedlings out under verandah, one of the seedling is in its mini greenhouse, the other is surrounded by taller pots. At the beginning of September, it's still quite cold at night. Will see how they are in a few days. | About the Author Thithi Deer park 4th September 2014 6:01pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |

David says... This jackfruit is the first off my marcotted "e;Golden Nugget"e; tree. The tree is now 6yr old.3m high. The other strange pic is ripening seed pods off a Gustavia tree 14 yr old. This yr is the second flowering. Flowers only last 1 day then fall off but they are magnificent. This summer the tree was covered.

Jo Melbourne1 says... Hi David, are you the David who has sold jackfruit (the fruit, not necessarily the tree) in the past? I chatted with you in June about buying one or two, then I've just noticed the email I sent you didn't go through and then lost your email address and phone number when my phone crashed (duh). I'm still most interested to buy a fresh jackfruit from you, this year, or next year. Thanks!
