I would stick to the 'Imperial'. Get one on Cleopatra or Troyer rootstock.

Other varieties you could consider are 'Sunburst' or 'Tropical Mandarin'(related to Emperor).

Plant in full sun and shield from strong winds if needed.

Hickson produce quality fruit in QLD.
Avoid Sunburst. It is rubbish. Doubt you would be able to source one anyway. 1/4 tangelo so the acid levels are high to start with. It needs high heat, rather than sub-tropical warmth. Only then will you get smallish seedy fruit with ok flavour. Otherwise the fruit remain tart.

Queensland is a big spot and the SE corner is really atypical of QLD.My hickson produces only ok fruit,my murcott throws to it's orange parentage and my imperial got chopped down due to poor fruit.I have 2 emperors and they are way better than the other varieties although my old ellendale came close. My minneola was sweet but bland and also got the chop.Tropical could be Darwin Emperor and therefore would be good quality in a warm climate. Most mandarins are good quality but have to be grown in the correct climate for top quality fruit.

I'd agree with Mike, you can pretty much grow all mandarin in SE Qld. Though it is a different question as to whether you get good tasting fruit.

I'm going to suggest Honey Murcott, it seems to do quite well at my patch in Brisbane. And the skin is thick enough to resist fruit flies. Taste is ok, sure it's not as good as the commercial growers. Yes, very orangy taste.

You can get sunburst, i think mine came from Big W or Bunnies. They are quite rare and if you see one and want one, get it right away! Do note that they are not a true mandarin (it's a hybrid) but the North Americans seem to like them alot.

My biggest problem is fruit fly. I prefer thicker skinned citrus like Flicks Pommello and Honneff's Grapefruit.
