Rabbit Resistant Plants (forum)

Pet rabbits, while providing you with a fair supply of free manure and a great companion, also eat every plant in their path (as one gardenia and numerous pot plants found out). They live in a sheltered courtyard that gets sun most of the day and I've decided to try planting a frangipani again. I covered the last one with mesh but they found out a way to eat the poor plant! This time I've thought a living barrier would be better and for the job, I would need rabbit proof plants that are hopefully rather smallish and hedge-like. Are there any plants that fit this description?

Oleander? Every part of that plant is poisonous - that may be the solution to the rabbit plague, but I don't think you want it near your pet.

The fungicide Ziram also repels rabbits.

Old tyres! The smell of tyres repels rabbits, but of course you may have to cut them away to remove once your trees get big!

Blood n bone is very efective against rabbits. You have to reapply after rain. They won't touch anything with a light sprinkling of b & b on it.

kert, I wonder if Ziram smells like foxes? Used to be a nursery near here, and the guy reckoned some product he used smelled like fox. It kept the rabbits away.

I have tried everything - including the blood n bone trick - and Dynamic Lifter...nothing seems to deter a hungry rabbit (even Oleander..) and I have dealt with 1000's of rabbits.
But - if you can protect the plants with some close knit mesh up to about 60cm - then they will be ok.
60cm height rabbit netting will stop them jumping over and/or reaching up to nibble - and 30cm flat on the ground will stop them digging up the roots of any plant which they will do - very happily.

Hi Amanda,
I remember reading that rabbits won't go through a line of growing GARLIC. Don't know if it's true.
Why not trap 'em & put 'em in a pot with spuds, carrots, onions etc :-)

He he Brendan....I should farm them and sell them as 'gourmet rabbit' meat!? Fortunately they can't get thru my fence - a couple have and the Staffy got them....
