Sea Buckthorn (forum)

I am wondering if anyone now has mature Sea Buckthorn plants? I notice some contributers to this forum have grown from seed in past. I made mistake to get only one plant from Yamina (sex unknown) and now not available. I would love to get this plant fruiting!

Mine (3 plants) are only young but I have a few cuttings growing.
I'll keep tabs on which is which when they flower.

I have grown some from seeds. They sit still in pots. Ithought they died over winter but they didn't. I sowed them last year and they are still not more than an inch. Some might be bigger as I sowed pomgranate as well and they look very similar and nearly all my labels disappeared. It is said that you can see weather a plant is male or female the way it grows (one is more erect than the other, but I can't see that yet). But I really wonder why such an expensive nursery doesn't bother telling you that you need a male and a female plant to get fruit.
Where did you get the cuttings from?
Are there cultivators in Australia?

I have 3 seedlings in 2nd or 3rd year.
cuttings... well suckering growth from base of plants and where roots were damaged came from one of them.
when the others are big enough I'll propagate from them too.

does anyone know where you might be able to get sea buckthorn in WA? seeds/seedlings or a mature plant to take suckers?
I tried Yamina but they are all out.

I just checked the shop I bought mine from and unfortunately it specifically states WA as a no go zone. It might be a tough call.

John, I bought seeds from ebay 2-3 years ago - but knowing WA quarantine that could well have changed by now!
One has thorns, the other one doesn't (only two germinated), so I hope that means a male and female.

How many seeds did you sow to get two plants Julie? I planted around 20 out of 50. Maybe I should sow them all? How long did it take for them to germinate? You'd think I was a cop in my past life with all the q's, hey?

Gosh John, I have totally forgotten! I've sown an awful lot of other seeds since then - methinks I should keep better records.
They are not doing brlliantly, but that's my fault for neglecting them. At least they arre still alive!

Hello Julie et al.
I am very interesting in Sea-Buckthorn in here in metro WA.
I was wondering if there was a local supplier of seeds or perhaps I could get seeds or cuttings off any locally growing plant?
Regards

I posted a reply yesterday - it seems it didn't go through! One of my Sea buckthorns didn't recover from winter, so I only have one left. And that one isn't looking too good either, so not much good for a cutting.

I'm hoping to successfully raise some of the Sea Buckthorn plants in the next month. They are an improved fruiting variety with seperate male and female plants. So I may be able to send some cuttings, male and female, in about 1 months time. Cheers!

Hi Joel
Do you mean that you only had a male plant and no female or do you still have a female one and just need a male?
There may also ready in 4 weeks a few plants of Cyphomandra sibundoyensis in case you're interested. They are a very rare and endangered species. Cheers!

Not sure which plants you mean but assume you are looking for Sea Buckthorn. I don't have any spare ones, just a couple of small plants which will need to grow for another year before I can take any more cuttings. Picture of the small male plants. Cheers!
