Seeking Capulin Cherry and Marula cuttings/seeds (forum)

24 responses

Helen starts with ...
Hello,
I would love to plant a few Capulin cherry trees (preferably the sweeter ecuadorian variety) also Marula trees.
I am unable to find these anywhere.
Could anyone help with cuttings or seeds?
I'm in Brisbane so I will come and pick them up if you are local, or I can send a return addressed envelope.
Thanks very much,
Helen.

Im getting a number in around september, so itd be a while till they re-establish
i have to buy more than i need to get a good price so ill have extras
if you dont have any joy from elsewhere then ill be an option.

Theyd be seedlings from Ecuadorian parents. Im hoping to plant out a heap and maybe in a few years ill find some tasty forms - such is the plan anyway

for Marula you need to ask Julie firth
sheed been growing them 15 or more years and has the best quality seedstock in the country

http://www.permaculturenursery.com.au/

brisbane would suit marula

im getting in seedlings
i get them small, pot them on and get them growing (hopefully)
till they are all healthy and strong

ive seen Capulin in esperance grow like the clappers when it gets in a spot it likes
tyen again ive seen stunted trees too
at any rate when treated well as young trees they have the potential to grow very fast

Have purchased two shipments of Marula seed, one from Africa (Silverhill Seeds) & one recently from South America on Ebay, have two plants growing from first lot & three have sprouted from second lot.

Customs opened shipment from Africa & did not touch the second shipment, seed is allowed into Australia.

Soak seed in water for 48hrs & place in mini green house in seed raising mix & you will have plants.

Cheers,
Michael.

Have four plants growing now and can see that there could be other embryo`s in the seed to sprout as Marula has three round chambers in each seed so I have put seed into seed raising mix again to see what happens, TBA

Just my luck, I had an order in the system for a Capulin cherry since 2010. A few became available while I was overseas and all disappeared all but immediately.
1/ Are they worth the chase?
2/ If so would anyone have it growing that could possibly find a small cutting to sell or swap?

There a volunteer seedlings around my garden, pretty strong weed potential. The only reason it hasn't gone absolutely feral here is because the tree is very much affected by brown rot during flowering which gets rid of 99% of the ffruit production.

I don't eat them, not good enough to eat imho but a pretty tree and bird distraction device :).

In my Encyclopaedia Botanica they are called 'bird cherries'. That tells you a lot!

They might be a tree to have if only for the bird distracting/ornamental properties. I thought I read somewhere that there are improved varieties floating around.
Jason, I might take you up on your offer for a seedling if still available?, I have a Jujube rootstock just starting to sprout that you could have a play around with. Not sure what's going to happen to it, on one hand it's just starting to sprout when it should be going into dormancy.

Mike, I don't know one variety from another but with this variety the skin is yellowish/crispy and you can crack it open leaving the internal membrane intact. Taste is very mild.
Arrived home 10/4. Loved every minute, will be returning in the near future. Not before I visit Cairns.
