Smoke Treatment for Seeds (forum)

Some native species, such as Kennedia and coral creeper, need smoke treatment, but most websites recommend either buying expensive germination helpers or soaking the seeds in smoke water (seems like too much work). I was wondering if the seeds would have the same positive results from being soaked in water with fresh ash dissolved in it?

Nick T, this is from the net:
Smoke water, prepared from burning 6 kg of fresh and dry foliage of Eucalyptus, Adenanthos and Banksia species and bubbling the smoke through water (20 L) for 1 h.
At home you could try making a bong (water pipe) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bong but instead of inhaling put a air venturi on the top to suck through the air.

Nick can't you just toss the seeds in a big ashtray in the rain and put a few drops of tea tree or Euc oil in.

Hi Nick,
Kennedia (I think coral creeper is Kennedia coccinea) is a legume. The common method to break dormancy is through scarification either mechanical with sandpaper but most easy is to simply drop in just boiled water and let cool.
Plenty of other native species respond to smoke though. The active ingredient is in the smoke not the ash. If you are going to make smoke dont bother with the water just get the seeds into the smoke. Native nurseries might have a smoke room with a stove and vacuum cleaner. I have seen simple smokers with a cardboard box and bee smoker. Or a Camberwall carrot and some resolution.
