Can anyone suggest a tree to shade a westerly facing wall (6 mts high) that is quickish growing, narrow and hardy suitable for Rockhampton? Have considered Lillypilly but would prefer a trunk.

Ravenala madagascariensis
Traveller Palm
North South Palm
East West palm, all one and the same. Should grow fairly quickly in Rocky. Plant more depending on how long the wall is.

I also want to plant a Travellers Palm - in Sydney.
I'm confused - which part of a Travellers Palm is supposed to face east-west? (The 2 faces of the fan or the 2 edges of the fan).

I am no fan of these monstrous woody bananas. If they drop seeds they can form messy thickets.I don't know how vigorous and big they would get in Sydney.

Travellers palms are one of the few plants I find have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.. they only place they look any good is in their native Madagascar. One slightly more attractive alternative might be the giant Strelitzia, S. nicolai, a bird of paradise plant with white and navy/black flowers.. not sure how fast they grow but they have a nicer overall shape than the palms.

When doing gardening work on the Gold Coast, I used to stick my knife into the leaf bases to make a hole to get a drink occasionally.
at least a litre or two of rainwater from each leaf.
It tasted good and was much appreciated in the heat.
I reckon thats at least one redeming feature Phil ;-)

They think that might be why they are called Travellers Palms, as they can provide water in an emergency, rather than the east/west direction pointer. I'd hate to think how long that water had been there tho... ☚ ☛
