Thanks, Michael. I have got in the habit of giving it half a watering can full before I leave for work every morning (and the bananas and fig, and anything fairly new).

Carambola (Star fruit) (Cutting) 10/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 3242 days 6hrs

Comments: -

Lovely weeping tree with small pink flowers several times a year. However, must get a really good watering at that time to grow fruit successfully, otherwise the tiny fruit will fall. Virtually no fruit in the last 2 years, but in 2017 had a huge crop of several hundred fruits due to timely rain in late summer. Fruit taste was excellent. Important to wait for the colour to start changing from green to yellow, but should pick before it becomes too ripe as it then loses flavour.

Fruiting Months May

Planted: 2003

Height 4 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 100 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pruned By: 30% in

Pollination: Self Pollination

When I Fertilise: When Fruiting

Pest Control:

Fruit can get macadamia moth weevil damage in summer months, so spray is beneficial. I prune the top of the tree to keep within reach for fruit picking.

Carambola Starfruit - Kary 8/10

Linnie's Edible Fruits
Update: 4182 days 8hrs

Comments: -

Bought this plant from Daleys years ago. It achieved about 1.5 spindly metres growth, and then nearly died from frost, due to our marginal growing conditions. It held on, and, this year, has become very much more lush in appearance and looks like a sturdy, healthy plant. I hope it is self-pollinating, as I only have one plant, and I see the words "Pollination beneficial"!

Height 3 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Mulch, longalife, cow poo, blood and bone etc

Organic Status:Partially Organic

Question:

This Carambola (same one as discussed here some time ago) was bought as a grafted plant, but I can't recall which graft it was. It now fruits abundantly, starting about 3 years ago with its first handful of fruits, but going into full production a couple of years ago. The only problem is that the fruit is to astringent to make for pleasant eating. Any idea why, or how to correct that issue, as it is an abundant creature now?! :-) Thank you.

Carambola Starfruit - Kary

Correy's Edible Fruits
Update: 4503 days 18hrs

Comments: -

It is only young. I did actually get 1 fruit first year but the possum got it. I have tasted this variety from the orchard in Daleys Nursery and it is very juicy and incredibly tasty. They crop really well but fruit fly may be a problem if you are not onto it.

Pollination: No

I found that fruit fly is not the problem, but moths which lay eggs and small grubs then enter the middle of the fruit.

Carambola Starfruit - Kary (Grafted) 3/10

Pat1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4618 days 1hrs

Comments: - I think my tree would have done better if it was in a less windy position.  I am surprised it has not died from the gusty winds.  Had a few fruits 2 years ago but they did not have enough time to grow and mature properly before it gets too cold.  I think Perth is probably too cold for this tree unless you grow it in a hot house.

Planted: 2005

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: Self Pollination

Question: Has anyone got any success stories with Carambola in Perth?

They do need protection in their first year. Star fruit grow really well in Perth as do many tropical fruit trees.

I wonder if it is staying too wet in the tree bag so have now re-potted in plastic pot with feet off the ground.
