Jakfruit - Seedling (Seedling)

JenJen's Edible Fruits
Update: 1524 days 13hrs

Comments: - Great versatile fruit. You can eat it as a curry when it is green. The fruit is sweet and tasty when ripe. The seeds can be boiled and eaten plain or in a curry too.

Height 40 Centimetres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Question: Again I water sparingly and not often. The tropical plants I've had so far do not appear to like too much water. I'll keep it in the pot until winter passes and then plant it in the ground in soring as the weather warms up. I hope it will grown down here in Melbourne.

Jakfruit - Brinsmead Special (Grafted)

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 1544 days 20hrs

Comments: -

Wanted to try a crisp grafted variety from Daleys, seeing that our own seedlings were doing quite well in Sydney.

During several days of rain in 2019, the bottom of the trunk got attacked by a white powdery fungus, so the tree is not growing well at present. Painted this area with copper fungicide to try and save the tree. Unfortunately, the tree did not survive the drought and heat wave conditions in 2020.

Jakfruit - Seedling 9/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 1598 days 22hrs

Comments: -

Jakfruit tastes great but is rather expensive to buy in Sydney, so decided to try growing it. The tree likes plenty of water, but we don't have a suitable location so it took a while of TLC to get the tree to grow large enough to start producing fruit. We found that the tree initially produced many male fruits (smooth skin) which go mouldy and drop off, and it took a long time before we got the first female fruit (rougher skin) - took about 13 years. The fruit grew well and to a large size. Unfortunately, it ripened and dropped to the ground during our 2-week absence on holidays so we didn't get to taste it.

But with the warming climate, we are now getting more fruits forming and in 2019 we had a crop of 3 jackfruits to full maturity.

By the way, none of the fruit books talk about the male and female fruits, so this is from our experience.

Markmelb's Edible Fruits
Update: 1866 days 23hrs

Comments: -

Planted Late December 2014 - Growing amazingly well in its Microclimate over shaded by pea eggplants for shade protection - doesnt like it too hot - tends to wilt and wants more water when this occurs - Updat March 2019 - I think it was getting root rot issues so put back in a pot in spring 2017 and is looking better now in 3/2019

Planted: 2014

Growing: In the Ground

Sun/Shade: Low Sun

Pollination: Cross Pollination

Question:

3rd pic Jan 28 2016 - gave heat from a 5watt brewers pad under frost cloth over winter

Not sure what variety this is?, was an Ebay purchase also didnt arrive in a good state and was really small - has since adpated and put on new leaves. When i got it, it was a  single skinny little stem with a bud at the top!!. Have since given that eBay shop a Bad review!. Anyway's hope to see this little guy grow and if it survives an Adelaide winter then i might purchase a bigger specimen from Daleys.

I have grown a few seedlings and kept one for myself, from a truly delicious fruit we came across in an abandoned orchard while learning to prune. Not sure if I'm game to plant it as it's supposed to grow quite tall and my garden is already full lol. Note: Have given this plant to a friend with acreage who swears she will share the fruit with me!

Winter 2011: I am not sure what variety these are as again my friend is germinating them from seeds that I collected. You can see in the pic that the sizes are very different. The big one was one of the first of all the seeds we collected to germinate while the other has come up months later. LESSON: be patient!!!

Spring 2011: My friend took one and I took the other. Hopefully between us we can get fruit from one!

Summer 2012: He has been home for a few months now but he is not happy. I think that the weather has just been too cold for him to really get going. The weather is warming up now though so I am hoping that he will get a chance to put on some new growth before winter. I might have to get a glasshouse or bring him into the bathroom to keep him alive over winter if he doesn't get a bit more established.

Planted: 2011

Height 30 Centimetres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Pollination: No

Pest Control: Ants love farming scale on them. The tiny leaf curling caterpillars love the new growth and you have to be SO carful not to snap it off when you're trying to get rid of it.
