I prefer them to apples now and would love to have more of these. Recommend them to anywhere in Australia that's got decent warmth because they are very hardy and deciduous plants. Jujube Rootstock (Grafted) 9/10Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1832 days 3hrs Comments: - We have Chico and Li and they are very easy to grow. They are deciduous so handle the cool, wet winters no problems - and very heat tolerant. The fruit is superior with regular watering in summer though. They are thorny and sucker alot. A tree mat can help prevent some of the suckers from coming up. jujube/Red Chinese date (Grafted) 10/10JUJUBEFORSALEINMELBOURNE1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4158 days 14hrs Comments: -
Jujube, Red Date, or Chinese Date Italian:'Zinzoli' or 'giuggiola' (jujola) Korean: daechu Thai:Poot-sa Chinese:hong zao I have 8 trees, two of them 10 years old, the rest are newly
planted September 2009. Very easy to look after, no pruning, pest free, not
fussy about soil. Jujube fruit will dry
on the tree after ripening. Dried fruits require no preservative; the tree can
go through drought. In general and also
apply to this fruit tree, to get abundant of fruits, water should be
given during flowering and fruiting season otherwise fruit embryos will
drop. Fertiliser:
Dynamic lifter, blood and bone or aged manure are recommended, a bit at
the time after 4 months in the ground or pot, then every 2 months in
growing seasons. Apply Richo brand completed minerals once a year in December as vitamin supplementary.
I was told by a herbalist that this fruit is very good for
your health, ranging from purifying your blood to reducing menopause symptom etc.
Personally, it is a nice sweet fruit to eat, you can eat fresh or dried. Shredded dried fruit that can be added to cereal. You can cook the same way as dried sultana. Making mildly sweet tea from dried fruit by just dropping a few slices of dried jujube fruits in boiling water. Serve as tea and then eat the residue. In Thailand, a drinkcan be made from dried fruit mixed with sugar and hot water, then served chilled. Jujube Rootstock (Grafted)BJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4391 days 4hrs Comments: - This plant is supposed to be the ultimate in toughness; requiring about 2000 'heat hours', which it should obtain against a west facing wall in a pot in full Perth sun. I was surprised as to how similar to dates the fruit tasted - quite acceptable! For something so tough it is surprisingly attractive and graceful. It is already fruiting. I've planted a few strawberries in the pot to act as a living mulch. Most of the strawberries have been fried by the sun, but they are recovering in autumn. The jujube lost its leaves on its own accord in May. By Jan 2012 there are a few fruit - but not as many as last year. I'm not sure if it is ideally suited to a pot. The plant has grown about 40cm and seems unfazed by the hottest of days. May 2012 - leaves turned yellow and shed through autumn. The plant has been released into the ground. I discovered that the roots had taken up most of the area of the pot ... clearly jujube are not suited to pots of roots would need to be trimmed every 12 months. It will still be subject to substantial heat, but I hope it will grow larger in the freedom of the soil. I am hoping that in time it will assist with shading the avocado Planted: 2011 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Pest Control: none Was this review helpful? Jujube - Li (Grafted)Cam's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4657 days 4hrs Comments: - I finally bought my first jujube tree. I bought a LI variety because
it is often regarded as the best first tree to have. This plant is said
to withstand a good range of soil type and weather conditions as long as
it receives plenty of sunshine. For more cultural guide please refer
JujubeForSaleInMelbourne's page. I am still on the
lookout for a few more varieties to be added in my backyard, although
there's hardly any space left I have managed to reserve a couple of
sunny spots for my future jujube trees. You cannot have too many of
these fruits. Assuming my plants will provide me bucket loads fruits
which is too much for fresh consumption, the fruits are said to dry
happily on the tree. And once dried they can be kept in a jar for a long
period time. They will serve as great additions to my soup. Height 60 Centimetres Growing: In the Ground Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Was this review helpful? [4975 days 2hrs ago]Hello BJ, may I ask where you bought your jujube plants? Regards, CamBJ says... [4974 days 10hrs ago] Hi Cam, I got them from a user on here - 'Jujube for sale in Melbourne'. Give her a message and she should be able to send you some in winter.Cam says... [4970 days 16hrs ago] Hi BJ, I've read some posts from her but I thought of finding a few other places before deciding where to buy from because these plants are quite costly. Looks like JujubeForSale offers the most variety. Will contact her again. Thanks for your help.BJ says... [4970 days 14hrs ago] Yes, they are costly, but it is near impossible to find quality grafted plants. The Sub-Tropical Fruit Club of QLD had a really good, thorough article in a news letter on the Jujube last year. You could contact them and ask for a copy. They also gave these as contacts with propogating material (but no contact details): Phil Ciminata in WA imported material from California and China. Ben Waddelow from South Australia also imported several varieties from Roger Meyer in California. Di Tod has a plantation in Koorooman Vict. Jim Dawson in Gidgegannup WA sells plants.Cam says... [4965 days 4hrs ago] Thank you for your time and information. It seems like these plants won't be commercially available too soon so it might be a wise choice for me to contact JujubeForSale. We use dried red dates often to make nourishing Chinese medicinal soups as well as adding them to refreshing beverages either served warm or chilled. Delicious! I think it'll definitely be a worth while investment and as a new addition to my plant collection. Thanks again for your help. Cheers, Cam I hope you don't mind if I drop by to ask you other future plant queries.BJ says... [4963 days 16hrs ago] No problem Cam. Also, if you are put off by the price of the grafted plants, you can try them from seed. A Brisbane seller I know lists them regularly, and may even have some plants for sale if you enquire. Best of luck, Bruce.Cam says... [4938 days 16hrs ago] Sorry about the late reply. I have already bought some seeds from Phoenix Seeds. I will most likely order one from JujubeForSale, will contact her next year.Wenny says...
