amanda says... Anyway Freuds Cat here are some useful links and possible treatment options that may assist you. It could very well be woolly aphid - as galls are caused by "some" insect laying eggs under the bark :) (so I didn't disagree there...?) But Apple canker (Nectria) can also cause closed "galls"...but it is a fungus.. The point I make, I guess, is to be aware that there will be very different treatment regimes for a fungus vs an insect and vs a bacterial infection... So if one doesn't work try another...(unless you want a qualified person to take care of the diagnosis and treatment, of course...which is your choice to make :) Maybe this one is now past it's productive years? That's why I suggested a back up or a graft - depending on how old it is...? Good luck :) http://www.woodbridgefruittrees.com.au/woodbridgefruittrees/articles/175-woolly-aphid-and-rootstocks.html http://rayshorticulture.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/pest-3-wooly-aphid.html | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton, 400km North of Perth 12th March 2012 6:17pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Chris says... European canker of apples and pears is not present in Australia. It was eradicated 20 years ago. http://www.phau.com.au/pidd-docs/European%20canker%20FS.pdf | About the Author Chris Sydney 13th March 2012 6:21am #UserID: 2281 Posts: 263 View All Chris 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Freuds_Cat says... Thanks for your response. The tree is about 12 years old. The fruit is exceptional and plentiful and also provides shade to a special place in the garden. So I'm keen to keep it in place. I have to say I'm not quite sure what the story with this thread is. Who is John and why are people talking to him when he is not even posting here? Makes for a weird read. | About the Author FreudsCat1 Adelaide Hills 17th March 2012 10:49am #UserID: 6685 Posts: 2 View All FreudsCat1's Edible Fruit Trees |

wazzamcg says... I'm fairly sure you have Woolly Aphids - the picture is similar what I have seen on my trees. Watch this video to get rid of them. http://www.abc.net.au/local/videos/2011/04/28/3202377.htm The insecticides she recommends are Lebaycid and Baythroid, and also using lime suplhur after winter pruning. | About the Author wazzamcg Brisbane 22nd June 2013 8:13am #UserID: 4149 Posts: 101 View All wazzamcg's Edible Fruit Trees |
Dwain says... You guys are right; my tree is definitely infected with Woolly Aphids. I spoke to someone today from the nursery where bought my tree from and I was told they had an infestation last season. I found the video, posted by wazzamcg, very informative. I will pick up a bottle of Lebaycid tomorrow and hopefully, I should be able to get it under control.
