Is there anyone living on the Gold Coast who have grown Babaco from cuttings in this climate? I've tasted the fruit only once & fell in love with it. Would there be a spare cutting for me please to grow in Southport..thank you..

Cuttings are very hardy Rebecca and can sit around for quite a while (or get posted!) without being worse for wear.

Unfortunately, mine are both small - waiting for them to put on some growth when the weather warms up.

Maybe someone further afield can provide you with a cutting through the post.

As long as they have the most perfect drainage all the way down Peter, otherwise they will rot.

I'm keeping my one small plant (donated from a friend) in a pot placed on good soil hoping it will root down into the soil. I've heard of this method before for ensuring good drainage. Having had two plants in the ground that just keeled over for no good reason, am hoping this will keep this plant alive.

Hi folks..Rebecca from Southport Gold Coast back again
My 2 babaco that cost $70.00 plus delivery have gone west..all the rain we've had has not been kind 2 them despite being planted on a slope for extra drainage
Does ANYONE have any cuttings I can buy please? Only to happy to cover costs & postage..

It seems I'm destined NOT to have my own trees..the fruit is to die for & I'd love to get some organised..

Many thanks
Rebecca. Gold Coast.

Just make sure you use a very good drainage mix for your pot.
Had mine in a good mix and in a pot, actually 4 fruits started growing, then the heavy extended rain started a few months ago.
First the leaves fell off then it fell over.

There's a guy on gumtree selling them along with other goodies. Search for exotic fruit trees - he's in leeming.

Taste a Bab. before you buy'there is little resemblance in taste between the Bab and a paw paw other than the taste is very poor-poor.

They sure don't taste like a paw paw but I wouldn't say they are any worse than the crusty old yellow paw paw. Red papaya from the real tropics, that's another story.

Ever heard of the joke "first prize a week in Adelaide ,second prize 2 weeks in Adelaide." Babaco is a lot like that --it's ridiculously productive but no one wants to take it, even for free.

Live on Hawthorns and wild Acorns for a week then tell me how Babaco tastes. Most of this is relative and all in the mind :D

To me Babaco tastes fine, I let them fall on the ground then come and eat them maybe a week later or when ever it is that they are fully ripe and I'm walking past.

I see we agree ; Babs are starvation food only. Doubtless at the siege of Stalingrad they would have been most welcome.

Well all of life is living on starvation foods for me anyway, I can't eat processed foods or anything high in sugar so one more starvation fruit doesn't hurt lol

Babaco blended up with honey and mint and frizzante is great. On thir own they are a bit of an acquired taste, but I wouldnt put them in the starvation food category by a long shot. I just pulled mine out because it fruited very well the first year, but was having to put too much energy into survival rather than fruiting over the next 3 years. I tried killing it three times, pulling it out and throwing it on the ground - it resprotued every time and had the will to live, but not the will to fruit unfortunately...

Jason, I fully understand . As for me, I find grapes almost poisonous to my digestion unless my partner peels them and removes the pips.

What is it with grapes.. I have the worst trouble with grains (all of them), all vegetable oils, nuts (all but macadamia is OK), potato, onion, grapes and some other high sugar fruits. Those seem the worst in my experience. Babaco is good, no problem :)!

Too right dr. Babaco flogged to unsuspecting cooler climate folks as a paw paw substitute.
