Hi
My sister has given me a guava tree in a pot that she grew from a seed. The fruit on the tree she got it from are about 7.5 cm in diameter and white fleshed. Someone has now told me it won't fruit because it has been grown from seed. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Cheers
Renee

Renee what someone told you is hogwash and it will fruit.Mexican cream guavas can be that big ie 300g and the skin goes white when ripe.Thai white guavas are much larger, green skinned and usually eaten crisp and unripe.
The tree can fruit at 2 years after planting when 1.6m high.

Hi Mike
Thanks for that. Lucky I joined this forum or my Guava would have been heading for the bin. Do you have any idea what time of the year they would flower and fruit in Perth and whether they would be deciduous in Perth?
Cheers Renee

You had better ask Perth people that. They are not always completely true to type from seeds but usually pretty similar.

A bit quiet on the guava front... Mike how did you go with the cuttings of your pineapple guava?
I just ate the last of my yellow cherry guavas and the tree is full of flowers again. Also for the first time the strawberry guava has buds on a couple of branches so I am hopeful for the first fruit this year.
I have ordered a Hawaiian and a China Pear from Daleys; not sure how they'll do here but they're only little plants and not too expensive so I decided to give them a go. The yellow cherries have woken up my taste buds for them. Used to eat them when I was a child in Hong Kong but that was a long time ago. :)

The good guava didn't grow and I passed the successful thai guava cuttings on.A friend who took lots of fruit found they sprouted out of one only and the seedling don't look like the parent.I have one of these and it sure looks like jungle fever with the seedling taking on the appearance of a thai giant white.I do have some newly sprouted seeds of argentinian yellow fleshed ones.

Thanks for the guava update, Mike. I worry that the more tropical guavas may not do well here but time will tell. :)

Tropical guavas grow in California and frost prone parts of Florida so Sydney might be a big stretch.

I grow Psidium guajava (tropical guava) and have it fruiting well outdoors in Auckland. I have seen them elsewhere in frosty sites where they recover and fruit again. Some strains may be less hardy but should be doable in Sydney even if it needs some good well draining soil brought in. I had Psidium guineense but though it grew the fruit were not the best. Sydney is noticably warmer and drier than Auckland.

Thanks Mike and denise1. Many people on this forum are attempting the 'impossible' and some have amazing successes so one is encouraged to try. I am less savvy about fruit growing than most but am learning heaps from others' experiences here. Thanks for sharing, guys (and gals) :)
