Perth heatwave

Hey how are all you sandgropers and your precious plants coping with the current heatwave? We're treading water over here in Northern NSW, on Australia Day it's all too clear we really are a country of droughts and flooding rains.

So true Phil :) I will have to wait until next week to answer that - our forecast only goes up to Mon and it will still be at 40oC then too..!? :-(

I am pretty interested to see how all my different trees cope without any protection except water?
I will post the results if anyone interested...it might be useful info from a climactic-extreme point..? (ie over a week of 38-44 oC temps)

Other than that Happy Aust Day Mate! :D

We had a day over 45c here not that long ago and I lost Avocado branches up to an inch thick where ever they happened to be in the tree without overhead leaf protection, nasty stuff. The sunlight wont be quite as strong in Perth since it's slightly higher latitude but if you can paint those exposed branches on your Avocados white you will be limiting the damage

You know - that's a good point Jason. Something that slipped my mind...oops.

Last year this happened to a young poinciana and it did major damage to the bark and the tree. It something u don't notice until it's too late :-(

I bet my struggling mangoe tree is going to cop that now...

(ps - so far only my loaded grapefruit tree has dropped a few leaves...)

This is reaalllly hot today!

The house has had no opurtunity to cool down and we are melting. All our icepoles have been eaten and someone forgot to refill the water jug. (I am a chief suspect). Very grim.
In the vegetative world the worst hit so far appear to be the peach tree. Starting to look how I feel.

Gero looks like it is even worse amanda.
I do not envy you today.

Phil I've got an Avocado here that was supposed to be Zutano... but it's not. It seems to be a case of someone collecting scions from a tree in a orchard that had reverted to rootstock and then I've ended up with a graft of a seedling. It's only ever made 3? fruit in 11 years, it's a very early cropper with large pear shaped fruit with a lot of fibre. Still edible.. and does ripen fruit maybe a month before anything else I have.

Anyway, this year It's made about 50 fruit ! so it's avoided the saw one more time. It seems like given enough time it might just be a heavy cropper, we will see what it can do next year. The other problem is that it's a very vigorous tree that's taking up a lot of space already and it's still a baby. The point of the story is you may as well leave it and see what it does in the long term

Day 5...I am starting to get sudden leaf drop on some fruit trees. Anyone else?
Still at least 4 days to go here...the power and water companies must be rubbing their hands with glee...!? :-O

I am watering fruit trees once - sometimes twice a day. The 9L bird bath totally evaporated by mid afternoon - so a very high evaporation rate happening.

I wanna live in Tassie!!! :D (well - they seem to be the only ones that don't get cyclones, drought, flooding, fires etc? And do they have fruit fly???) Sounds like heaven.

(trees in orchard with sub surface retic - recycled water system - are doing ok though..)

Did you get the down pour last night? What looked to be just a drop or two became a mini storm by about 8pm.
I must say it was very much appreciated as it kind of cooled everything off a little.
Since then it has just been muggy.

Bizzare but true - folk advised to leave Carnarvon, Exmouth etc due to flooding...but the Hwy South of C'von now closed due to rampant bush fires...

Travel in this area over summer is pretty dicey.

Such a land of contrasts. Still love it tho.

My trees coping really well so far...but maybe they are a bit more hardened to the heat? Even the stone fruit are fine..?
Maybe all my drought proofing efforts are paying off..?

Husband driving back to work from Geraldton to Collie today (600kms maybe?) - 3 major road diversions due to significant bush fires...many others not burning close enuf' to the road to cause closure yet (he witnessed) Very sad. Lightening strikes.
None in the Central West (here) so far...despite the "Extreme alerts" (ie evacuation in event of fire)

Major burning north of here though. strange how u don't see this on the news? The North Hwy closure sign is put right outside our street - so I see it, every closure.

These are "the" arterial roads in WA. Isolated by flood or fire often...?

WA is certainly a remarkable place - with the full spectrum of adverse weather events. From top to bottom?

(I just report this - because I sort of feel it's "humanising" somehow?)

But does anyone over east see this stuff about WA...?

(it's not just a "heatwave" here...it brings the Easterly wind - and thus the pyromaniacs...?)

Ps - had to laugh at the $400 increase in my home insurance policy to cover flooding now...what BS)

yes Amanda, WA being one third of Aust from top end down to Albany makes for such a variation in climates & weather patterns, the eastern states simply cant put a handle on us! If we were say 'Vic' up to Mandurah, 'NSW' as far up as Shark bay & then Qld for the rest it would make more headlines! 3 state governments, far more people = far more news!

WA sure is diverse and big being almost as big as QLD and NSW together, although Eden to Saibai Island is a far greater north south extent. The east side is so diverse due to the much higher mountains and higher rainfall coastal districts. We are diverse all over and neglected away from the south east and even in QLD we complain in the regions that the news is all about the 1% ofthe state next to the NSW border.

Hmnn..can actually smell the rain on the wind...it's so close - what a beautiful evening :) The wind has quite suddenly shifted from south to north...it's tantalising in truth.

Must say that the weather here can here change in the space of minutes - and it's dependent on often accursed wind... ;) Ironic really.

(and never burn off in "variable winds" no matter how light...I have many near Michael Jackon moments - burnt my eyelashes, clothes etc... eek!)

Oh u lucky Perth people! All that rain :) I could cry right now. Actually had to wear swimming goggles to bring the washing in - the dust and wind so bad.

My garden is taking the worst pounding - the last thing it needed at the end of an 11 day heatwave...

Geraldton is either cursed or in a rain-shadow.

70mm down the road in Lancelin SG! ;) My fruit trees etc have held up surprisingly well at the end of that 2 weeks...maybe they are more toughened to my conditions than I have given them credit for, or we think, sometimes.

A few tatty leaves, a tiny bit of marginal leaf burn, a little bit of leaf drop...no sunburn (even the stone fruit look fine) no broken branches.

Acerola dropped most of it's crop - but is still flowering madly. Hawaiian guava also dropped fruit (as usual) but no other guavas did. Fussy thing.

Lost a cupla natives - but they were already under stress prior - due to a borer of some kind. No big-tree damage on the greater block. It takes more than 100km/hr winds to cause them damage I have found.

Pleased that my pruning has prevented sunburn on the branches - phew. Can get away with a thicker canopy here tho.

I often wonder if it's "surprise" conditions that cause damage to plants in areas where they are not used to it?

Eg: A flood or frost on my block might cause a lot more damage - as it is a once in 50yrs type of event. I haven't "planted" for that...

Our first rain in 5 months is due today and I have dusted off my wellies in anticipation of some puddle stomping! :D

Every single fruit tree made it through our hottest summer on record, no problems.

I even have apples ripening - a few have sunburn spots - but otherwise ok. Surprised as the they are in full sun.

Maybe the secret is in the watering..?(as that's all I did - didn't use any drought shield etc)

Now the weather has cooled - I will remove some of the internal branches (that I keep for bark shading over summer) to allow for better light and airflow over the damper months.
This works well in our climate as it is so dry over summer that fungal infections have never been a problem.

I doubt my sub tropicals like jaboticaba, wampee, lychee etc would have been so happy tho....at all.

I wonder how other forum members in Perth etc fared with their trees?

Amanda,

My fig tree barely made it. It's had all of its leaves burnt 3 times and they All have fallen off and regrown over the last spring / summer period. And it's only in partial sun.
But it has survived, and that is all that has mattered.

My frangapannis have also struggled, with most of the leaves burnt almost crispy. I have moved them into partial sun aswell, to give it a bit of a break.

Looking forward to some good rains

Interesting about the fig mmav...was it in a pot too? or a young plant?

My brown turkey in full sun...and 4yrs old - it did fine but I water my fruit trees every day when it's over 35 oC (maybe about 50L + each time..?)

I have young Frangi's - but they are in the ground. Pots are hellish to look after in our summers aren't they!? :( I have got rid of nearly all of my potted plants now...
