Hi guys, took a trip up to cabramatta (sydney) yesterday and picked up heaps of tropical and exotic fruit ... yum (thai mangoes, longans, jakfruits etc). Came across this one though that tastes a bit like a sour apple:
Anyone know what this is?

Thanks guys .... thats awesome. I have a small ambarella growing in my backyard - its only about a year old and so i have never tasted the fruit before. Do they ripen up once picked? whens the best stage to eaten them?
Our tree survived our winter (its deciduous)just fine here in wollongong and its growing quick, it must be over 1.5m at the moment. Hopefully I get some fruit from it. Anyone have any experience growing ambarella in the subtropics?

Yep it is most certainly an amberalla.. Im from Sri Lanka and we have it over there... The ripe ones we eat just as u would eat mangoes...but we have a ball with the unripen ones!!!:)
You can peel it slice it or even just chop it up and mix some pepper and salt and eat it.. works like a relish. Yum..yum..
We make a curry with it too.. mmm
Enjoy

Have the Ambarellas ripened on the kitchen bench to a yellow colour yet?
They ripen on the tree to a yellow colour.
And daleys ambarellas are sweeter than those from the fruit shop.
In vietnam the children eat the coc (pron. with the last letter sounding from the back of the throat)- the vietnamese word for Ambarella.

Yeah , a couple of times, but it might have been in an excessively shady, bricked wall spot and so too dark and cold in winter.
I was waiting for it grow above the shade.

Does anyone know if the dwarf Ambarella is in Aus? I was thinking of getting in seeds to grow it from OS, but if it is already here, it would save me some time.

Hi BJ,
I ask the same question on a different posting under " Dwarf Ambarella" but got no answer. I am growing the normal size Ambarella and it's growing so fast that I'm scared it will get out of control and shade my other plants.
Below is a picture of a dwarf variety that I would like to buy.

Yes, I've seen Dwarf Ambarella plants in Aust.
Don't know where you'd buy one, but just keep it in mind and ask around and you should find it eventually.
Michael dont be afraid to prune it.
and keep the prunings as cuttings or give them to friends.
even truncheons (really big cuttings) will grow.
I like the sour taste of the leaves.
Nice raw with nam prik and sticky rice.

You can grow Ambarella in pot so you can control its height. As I know that this plant can be grown in pot and still produce fruits.

Yes speedy, I'd like to learn more about truncheons. I saw a segment on Gardening Aus a couple of years ago, really big cuttings, some the size of tree trunks being propogated. It got me very excited.

Hi Thao,
I tried growing my Ambarella in a pot and it grew tall and fast really quickly and the roots soon out grew the pot. I think a dwarf variety is better suited to pots than the ones Daley is selling but where would you go to buy a dwarf variety ?

I just became aware of dwarf ambarella trees and would like to grow one, but can't find anything including on eBay. I was interested to read the last comment by Mike Trenerry from Cairns on the Daleys ambarella page in the Tips on Ambarella. Unfortunately I don't know how to contact him to get seeds. Couldn't find him in the White pages. Any suggestions?
