Avocado - Reed (A) (Grafted) 8/10Danny N1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 2989 days 14hrs Comments: - I was very excited to recieve my Grafted Reed Avocado from Daleys!, but on closer inspection when i opened the box revealed that the avocado plant was riddled with Mealey Bugs - i mean they were everywhere on the avocado plant, other than that plant was in tip top shape. After treating the Mealey Bugs i have potted the avocado - have given this plant a little more TLC than the other tropical plants i have as avocado's are notoriously fussy when it comes to wet feet. It now sits in a big 510mm pot which has been turned into an "Air Pruned Pot" - this is my first time experimenting with an air pruned pot ( made these myself). Many benefits with air prunning pots i.e increased drainage, no root bound problem, bigger tap roots and more vigerous growth. I will update progress on the Reed Avocado after an Adelaide winter which is quickly approaching with only 8 weeks left of summer!. Planted: 2016 Height 1.5 Feet Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Autumn Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Seasol - Fortnightly. Pest Control: Mealy Bugs when arrived from Daley's!. Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report 8 of 13 people found this review useful* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted) 9/10Westy1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 3025 days 6hrs Comments: - We purchased this 5ft tree from a local nursery for a good price. We built a large mound to improve drainage (we have clay soils) using a combination of quality soil from under an acacia baileyana, composted chicken poo/straw and a bit of cow manure. We staked it on 3 sides to help protect it from the wind. It is partly shaded from a eucalypt branch overhead. Survived winter frosts without any damage in Adelaide hills. We are on only rainwater so water it by hand once a week at the moment, probably more during its first summer and then it'll mostly be on its own. No flowers yet but shouldn't be long Planted: 2015 Height 1.6 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure, gypsum and organics When I Fertilise: Spring Organic Status:Organic Was this review helpful? Avocado - Bacon (B) (Grafted) 10/10Westy1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 3025 days 6hrs Comments: - It was growing rapidly, even with our winter frosts, and the 45 degree heat didn't seem to bother it either, it grew 2 ft over winter and spring.but then the grasshoppers came out to play and ate the entire plant. nothing left but a 10cm stick! Doubtful it will come back. Any organic grasshopper solutions? Dwarf Avocado - Wurtz (A) (Grafted)Bek's Edible FruitsUpdate: 3777 days 3hrs Comments: - Bought this a few months ago. Hasn't really thrived, planted in a mound in the ground. The leaves have slowly dropped off one by one. The stem is still green though and can see some small buds so fingers crossed it will bounce back. Think it may have gotten baked in the hot sun and water didn't seem to soak into the soil properly so not sure it was getting sufficient water. We have just pulled it up, put it in a large pot and moved it to a more sheltered position to protect it from the harsh afternoon sun. Hopefully it will make it through as I looooove avocados Planted: 2013 Height 60 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Was this review helpful? Avocado - Bacon (B) 7/10Sarah's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4686 days 2hrs Comments: - Shade cloth on days over 35C and lots of water in Summer to prevent burn. I also paint the north facing stems as they were burnt yr 1. By the end of Winter it looks very average, yello/brown leaves falling off and I think it's on it's way out, but bounces back well each Spring. Still no flowers.
