My Edible Fruit Trees: Avocado Trees WA
Dwarf Avocado - Lamb Hass (A) (Grafted) 9/10Danny333's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1471 days 20hrs Comments: - Lamb Hass is a very productive & problem free tree. The fruit taste similar to Hass but are usually a little softer. The tree is quite compact for an avocado and I am growing mine in a 160L pot. This variety pollinates well on its own and is resistant to sunburn. The tree is also much more upright compared to The spreading nature of a regular Hass tree. Planted: 2016 Height 2.5 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 3 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: Self Pollination When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: None needed Organic Status:Partially Organic Was this review helpful? Avocado - Hass (A) 10/10Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1948 days 19hrs Comments: - Easy to grow. Lovely fruit. Self pollinating (but way better now we have a bee hive also) We harvest after winter - around November, as the fruit tastes so much better after the cold weather and it's water content drops. A great choice for a backyard tree, along with Reed. Planted: 2013 Height 6 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 4 First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pruned By: 30% in Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Acid lovers, little and often, alternating with slow relase organic chook manure pellets. Pest Control: Netting against parrots etc, rarely some copper sulphate sprays for Sooty blotch (note: not the same as Sooty Mold) on the trunk and branches. Organic Status:Partially Organic Question: When do other warm-temperate growers prune their Hass trees? References suggest immediately after fruit set, in cooler areas? (will have to sacrifice some fruit of course) Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report 7 of 16 people found this review useful* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
Dwarf Avocado - Wurtz (A) 5/10Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1950 days 18hrs Comments: - Not that fussed on this tree. It's droopy and dense growth is not good for air circulation through the canopy and it doesn't seem to set a lot of fruit as yet. The fruit is the more watery type, thin skin. Fruiting Months November Planted: 2015 Height 3 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Pruned By: 10% in Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Acid lovers, little and often Question: Does anyone get a decent crop from this variety? Avocado - Reed (A) (Grafted) 10/10Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1950 days 18hrs Comments: - I love this tree - the fruit is amazing and even better if you let them hang on the tree for an extra month or two. Buttery, nutty, creamy and huge. A lovely handsome tree - very vigorous and fruits prolifically. Highly recommend and tolerates cool weather no problems here. Planted: 2014 Height 5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pruned By: 30% in Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced Acid lovers alternating with slow release organic chook maure pellets, Little and often Organic Status:Partially Organic Question: I am wondering if Reed is self fertile perhaps? I have seen a large tree, grown in isolation, producing heaps of fruit? Was this review helpful? Avocado - Fuerte (B) (Grafted) 8/10Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1950 days 18hrs Comments: - It's a Type B and easy to grow. It flowers a bit too early in our cooler climate so fruit set is not great and a few are cocktail avocados. I planted it for cross pollinating our Type A's - but it tends to flower a bit earlier than all of them. Fruiting Months October and November Planted: 2015 Height 5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pruned By: 30% in Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced Organic Acid lovers, little and often, alternating with slow release organic chook manure pellets. Dwarf Avocado - Pinkerton (A)Amanda's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1954 days 18hrs Comments: - Only planted last year so can't really comment yet. It's growing well and flowers profusely enough. Too young to set fruit perhaps. Planted: 2018 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pruned By: 5% in Spring Fertiliser or Organics Used: Acid lovers, little and often as we are on sandy loam Was this review helpful? Dwarf Avocado - Lamb Hass (A) (Seedling) 8/10Kath5's Edible FruitsUpdate: 2569 days 18hrs Comments: - Seems to be doing well, planted in mid winter at about 1m high and flowering already 1.5 months later. The branches droop a lot so I will keep it staked until it has a few good strong branches to hold rest of the plant up. Dwarf Avocado - Wurtz (A) (Grafted)BJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4630 days 7hrs Comments: - Initially purchased with the intent of spending its life in a pot I've decided to pull up some pavers and set it free in the ground! It is going in a slender bed with improved soil (most of it is compost, soil improver and cow poo), and is protected from the worst of the WA summer suns. Fingers crossed that it will make loads of babies with the Fuerte friend I purchased! It is planted about 1.5m from the Fuerte. I'm hoping the Wurtz will grow to be about 2m x 2m Its leaves have lost a lot of their green so I have added some trace elements (iron and zinc) and new growth appears to be greener. Within weeks new leaves are emerging with the standard red/copper colour which I hope indicates that whatever was missing is back! Now a few months later it has grown about 50cm and is a solid little shrub. The outside leaves get scorched on hot days and the plant will drop older leaves if it has water stress (must remember to water a bit more often) but nutrients and water are resulting in a tough little avocado. In August 2011 it is flowering like crazy (the leaves are going brown again and being replaced by new leaves - it doesn't look the best but the plant seems happy). By October 2011 the tree has lost all its old leaves and is covered in rich lush new growth. This tree still struggles with hot summer days - but extra mulch, and water help. I don't think any fruit set - but it continues to put on volumn and looks healthy. Organic Status:Organic Question: I have had this avocado hass planted for about 8 months now it is about 1m-1.5m tall but has not developed any fruit yet as it is still to young. The question i wanted advice on was that i have eaten hass Avocado before and like the taste but they are generally not all that large a fruit. I have seen other avocado trees around the Perth area that have a larger and slightly different shaped fruit on them (more pear shaped) and the skin of the fruit does not turn purple like the hass but remains green. Cold anyone please tell me the name of this avocado, more information about it, how it compares to the hass and best place to purchase in Perth? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
