My Edible Fruit Trees: Asian Trees WA

Choose Your State: ALL NSW QLD VIC WA ACT NT SA TAS NT

Many of us are familiar with the lychee because they are easy to grow commercially but there are so many other asian fruits which are great tasting that you may only experience from the local growers below.

Longan - Seedling (Seedling) 7/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1783 days 21hrs

Comments: - This tree is now about 10yrs old and still hasn't had fruit yet. It got it's very first flowers this summer, only a very few, but maybe next year it will get started properly. I think this selection might be chill-sensitive as it get's the winter yellows - which disappear once the weather warms up again in Spring.
This tree was relocated from up north, with us, and has been planted here since 2012.

Planted: 2008

Height 5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced organic Acid lovers, sometimes inorganic acid lovers, alternating with slow release organic chook pellets. Little and often. Suphur in early spring and iron sulphate - when pH indicates.

Longan - Chompoo 9/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1784 days 22hrs

Comments: - Marcotted so it starts fruiting straight away. I pruned the fruitlets off for the first year, left some for the scond year - but I probably should just let the tree focus on growing instead. It seems a bit less fussy than the Kohala when it comes to the bore water and rarely gets chlorosis. It might be a varietal difference, or not.

Fruiting Months January, February, March

Planted: 2017

Height 1.5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

First Fruited: 1 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1785 days 9hrs

Comments: - Very fast and vigorous growth - hardy and not bothered too much by the lime in the bore water either. Perhaps a possible rootstock candidate?
Not bothered by our winters. Only planted last year so no fruit as yet.

Wampee (Grafted) 8/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1785 days 9hrs

Comments: - I love the Guy Sam fruits - they are so moreish. Have had trouble getting the Yeem Pay to grow here. I have several seedling plants now, to see what they produce. If the Guy Sam fruits were bigger they could be so popular.
Weighting the branches down inceases flowering, like it does for apples. They also need any alkalinity managed and prefer slightly acidic and organic rich soils.
A nice looking large bush here, bees love the flowers. Likes regular watering.
Our two 10yr old trees were relocated from 700km north and handled this well. I recently lost one of these - I don't know why at this stage. It died quite suddenly.

Fruiting Months January, February, March, December

Planted: 2008

Height 3 metres

Qty: 6

First Fruited: 5 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced Acid lovers, alternating with organic chook manrue pellets

Question:

Are Yeem Pay more cold sensitive than Guy Sam?

Lychee Tai So 7/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1786 days 8hrs

Comments: - Marcotted. Only very small as yet. Doesn't like the lime in our bore water so has to managed the same as the Kwai Mai Pink we have. Tai So is reputed to be a more heat tolerant variety than Kwai Mai Pink - for Perth. It will be interesting to see how it performs in my slightly colder and wetter winters here. I am hoping that cross-pollination will improve fruit set for both lychees.

Lychee Kwai Mai Pink (Grafted) 7/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1786 days 8hrs

Comments: - Previously known as Bosworth 3. A compact tree here and has been quite challenging to get to fruit. It doesn't like the lime in our bore water so I have to use acidifying fertilisers to keep it green and happy. I can become a little chlorotic in our winters - so is perhaps chill-sensitive. Is very recalitrant to flower and fruit. Had no flowers this season due to a boron insufficiency, for eg.
I am hoping it will improve as it matures. When I do get fruit it is delicious of course.I have planted Tai So nearby in the hope that cross pollination might also help.
This tree was dug up 7yrs ago and relocated from Geraldton, so it is 10yrs old now.

Carambola Starfruit - Kary (Grafted) 3/10

Pat1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3833 days 17hrs

Comments: - I think my tree would have done better if it was in a less windy position.  I am surprised it has not died from the gusty winds.  Had a few fruits 2 years ago but they did not have enough time to grow and mature properly before it gets too cold.  I think Perth is probably too cold for this tree unless you grow it in a hot house.

Planted: 2005

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: Self Pollination

Question: Has anyone got any success stories with Carambola in Perth?

They do need protection in their first year. Star fruit grow really well in Perth as do many tropical fruit trees.

Longan Seedling

Pat1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3833 days 17hrs

Comments: - I have tried a few Marcotted varieties of Longan and Lychee but they have all died in my garden despite best possible care.  I have a few seedlings raised from fruits bought from the market.  These were very large fruits.  I was skeptical as seedlings are often inferior and the fruit may be small and worthless.  However, these trees are much tougher than the marcotted ones and they have survived the coastal gusty storms of Perth.  After 14 years it finally started to flower last year and had a few fruits which were amazingly large and fleshy and yummy.  Hoping for a larger crop this year but we have experienced record storm this year and a lot of the flowers are damaged... will see how it goes. I have high hopes for this tree.

Does not need full sun.  Large sweet fruit when thinned.  Reliable producer.  I never had problems with birds eating my fruit until last year and this year they were early and vicious.  I had to net the tree this year.

My loquat came from Daleys and I was a little hesitant to proceed with my purchase due to our tropical climate. It has been in the ground for a year and I chose my site carefully. So far so good - the new growth on the top has come since it has been in the ground.

An exotic from Daleys planted last year and thriving. Again in the dappled sun on a slope in the orchard. It had a slight setback when we burnt off a pile of dead branches etc. near it {same as the Wampi} and the leaves were burnt. That was so upsetting however they have all bounced back beautifully. Thank God!! Looking forward to watching and caring for this plant. in the years to come.

Carambola Starfruit - Kary 10/10

PhilippafromDerbyWA1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4592 days 2hrs

Comments: -

This tree was here when we bought the place and is one of my favorites. The kid underneath is one of my best too. He is the youngest  of a blended family of 10, which halve of still live at home. Now you can probably understand why I love to be in my garden. Among other things it is my serenity my peace.

Star fruit abound on this tree nearly all year round there is something happening from its pretty little flowers to its crunchy tart juicy fruit. One of my older boys loves them and eats them whole off the tree. This one is planted in mostly shade between towering bamboo and a large date palm. It is very healthy, prolific fruiter and very pretty. In need of a good prune no dought.

Loquat - Enormity (Grafted) 7/10

Amanda19's Edible Fruits
Update: 4823 days 20hrs

Comments: -

This is a very sick loquat! It is very exposed and was a bad choice of plant from the start - as the graft was so low on the trunk. With the constant wind and salinity it has not fared well.

I recently discovered a large stem canker (collar rot) hiding under the bark at the graft point - which just peeled away. I have scraped it back and treated but it probably won't survive.

Just planted (Aug09)

July 2010 - doing very well. I think it loves the constant subsoil moisture from the Biolytix. Not phased by the scorching summer or wind.

Nov 2010: Now in a 35L tree bag in an enclosed shade house. Has a dozen fruit at present and likes the shadehouse. The ants loved the flowers so I am guessing they did the pollination job.

Perhaps a tie with my Pomegranate in relation to being my favourite fruit tree.

Has some sun damage on the lower leaves and some new growth sprouting out the top.

I have sprayed all my fruit trees with 'Drought shield' from Yates, and it is working really well to protect new growth and keep moisture in the plant on very hot days. I would recommed this product to others.
