They say where you grow mangoes you can grow avocados. My B type avocado is young yet my mangoes are old. So here is hopjng the avo s thrive!

I do apologise the astute among you would have realised that one of my photoes is of my Black Sapote. I have since added a photo of my Bacon Avocado and left the sapote there - just to keep it interesting.

Avocado - Fuerte (B) (Grafted) 8/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2566 days 5hrs

Comments: - It's a Type B and easy to grow. It flowers a bit too early in our cooler climate so fruit set is not great and a few are cocktail avocados. I planted it for cross pollinating our Type A's - but it tends to flower a bit earlier than all of them.
It is a very vigorous and spreading tree, be warned. This pic is ours at 4yrs old.
Sand improvement is really important here, for strong healthy growth and good fruiting. I use plenty of Clay Plus, fine coir and a good quality compost (make sure the compost pH is not alkaline before adding it) and lots of mulchy things - even large pieces of our fire wood/logs, half buried under the canopy and drip line, as avocados have shallow feeder roots that need protecting. Their leaf litter stays where it falls and I use a complete fertiliser that has trace elements/minerals added.
It's important that their topsoil remains moist in our summers - so this can mean watering daily in a heatwave. Drainage is not an issue in our deep sands, which is a bonus for avocados, being prone to root rots due to "wet feet"

I had two grafted Hass and they both died at same time (1.5yrs old) (they were flowering at this stage too..)

I think my area and scheme water too saline for them - they are not a common sight in Geraldton at all.

Hi Amanda Ihave grown Hass for 20 years, overlooking a saltwater canal with approx.200 fruit a year. What Hass do not like is wet feet, mine grow on sand with a natural fresh water level at 2-3 metres. There are many avocados growing in gardens around this area so air salinity is not your problem.

Wow - thanks GoldCoaster! although don't your trees have wet feet at that water table level? Our natural ground water is saline too...can only grow "saltine" kikuyu grass with it...(for eg)
Goldcoaster says... [5765 days 21hrs ago]
Amanda the fresh water level is a natural phenomenon and is 10 – 15 centimetres in depth, it runs on a thin natural clay layer with corresponding fresh water levels about every 3 – 4 metres throughout the sand layer (about 30 metres thick) where fine clay particles build up - so no wet feet. The fresh water layer is heavy in iron, sulphur and other minerals. The base of my trees have been inundated several times when we have had moderate flooding with no ill effects. Have you tried mounding them with a porous base? Best of Luck.

Avocado - Hass (A) 10/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2564 days 6hrs

Comments: - Easy to grow. Lovely fruit. Self pollinating (but way better now we have a bee hive also) We harvest after winter - around November, as the fruit tastes so much better after the cold weather and it's water content drops. A great choice for a backyard tree, along with Reed.
I apply a lot of varied types of mulching materials, including logs/wood, like in the photo. There is evidence that with appropriate mulching we can encourage increased growth of the beneficial fungi in the soil - which can help outcompete any pathogenic fungi. This is very helpful for avocados.

Question: When do other warm-temperate growers prune their Hass trees? References suggest immediately after fruit set, in cooler areas? (will have to sacrifice some fruit of course)

Question:

I have had this avocado hass planted for about 8 months now it is about 1m-1.5m tall but has not developed any fruit yet as it is still to young. The question i wanted advice on was that i have eaten hass Avocado before and like the taste but they are generally not all that large a fruit. I have seen other avocado trees around the Perth area that have a larger and slightly different shaped fruit on them (more pear shaped) and the skin of the fruit does not turn purple like the hass but remains green. Cold anyone please tell me the name of this avocado, more information about it, how it compares to the hass and best place to purchase in Perth? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Avocado - Reed (A) (Grafted) 10/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2566 days 5hrs

Comments: - I love this tree - the fruit is amazing and even better if you let them hang on the tree for an extra month or two. Buttery, nutty, creamy and huge. A lovely handsome tree - very vigorous and fruits prolifically. Highly recommend and tolerates cool weather no problems here.
We harvest ours from Christmas onwards. Our fruits won First Prize at one of the country Ag shows last season too.
They grow well in our sand that has been improved with the clay plus, fine coir, compost and lots of OM - which makes the rich organic loam that they particularly need to thrive.

Dwarf Avocado - Lamb Hass (A) (Grafted) 9/10

Danny333's Edible Fruits
Update: 2087 days 7hrs

Comments: -

Lamb Hass is a very productive & problem free tree. The fruit taste similar to Hass but are usually a little softer. The tree is quite compact for an avocado and I am growing mine in a 160L pot. This variety pollinates well on its own and is resistant to sunburn.

The tree is also much more upright compared to The spreading nature of a regular Hass tree.

Dwarf Avocado - Wurtz (A) 5/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2566 days 5hrs

Comments: - Not that fussed on this tree. It's droopy and dense growth is not good for air circulation through the canopy and it doesn't seem to set a lot of fruit as yet. The fruit is the more watery type, thin skin.

Fruiting Months November

Question: Does anyone get a decent crop from this variety?
We have a Type B nearby and a bee hive - but it still doesn't set many fruit, especially compared to the Hass and Reed?

Dwarf Avocado - Wurtz (A) (Grafted)

BJ11_old_address's Edible Fruits
Update: 5245 days 18hrs

Comments: -

Initially purchased with the intent of spending its life in a pot I've decided to pull up some pavers and set it free in the ground! It is going in a slender bed with improved soil (most of it is compost, soil improver and cow poo), and is protected from the worst of the WA summer suns. Fingers crossed that it will make loads of babies with the Fuerte friend I purchased! It is planted about 1.5m from the Fuerte. I'm hoping the Wurtz will grow to be about 2m x 2m

Its leaves have lost a lot of their green so I have added some trace elements (iron and zinc) and new growth appears to be greener. Within weeks new leaves are emerging with the standard red/copper colour which I hope indicates that whatever was missing is back! Now a few months later it has grown about 50cm and is a solid little shrub. The outside leaves get scorched on hot days and the plant will drop older leaves if it has water stress (must remember to water a bit more often) but nutrients and water are resulting in a tough little avocado.

In August 2011 it is flowering like crazy (the leaves are going brown again and being replaced by new leaves - it doesn't look the best but the plant seems happy). By October 2011 the tree has lost all its old leaves and is covered in rich lush new growth.

This tree still struggles with hot summer days - but extra mulch, and water help. I don't think any fruit set - but it continues to put on volumn and looks healthy.
