Avocado Hass

TyalgumPhil's Edible Fruits
Update: 5842 days 7hrs

Comments: - Healthy young tree bought locally. Pictured is the original Hass tree in California from whence came the millions of Hass trees growing worldwide. It was a chance seedling in 1926 and unfortunately succumbed to Phytophthora in 2002.

After Fruiting

Question: Little information about GROWTH RATE available. I want a Bacon & a Reed but one has to be a screening plant to screen out neighbour. Which one? I cannot find this information anywhere and hoping somebody out there can provide clarification. Thanks | Michael J - Copacabana, NSW

Avocados are the most difficult fruit trees to grow. A good way to prepare them is to have a tractor tyre and build the soil up over the tractor tyre and then plant it on the top. Really good draining is very important. Their leaves are very tasty though the possums love them too.

They are an expensive mistake - what about cadmium levels in tyres - are they not poisonous ?

One of my favourites Avocado.  It used to have plenty of leaves when I got it.  It flowered and slowly the leaves were falling.   I don't know why??? I checked what it looks like inside and underneath the pot ....I saw plenty of worms.   Really plenty of worms in the soil inside the pot.  I changed the organic soil and now new leaves are developing.

Avocado - Bacon (B)

Nemingha's Edible Fruits
Update: 6111 days 12hrs

Comments: -

Our bacon avocado is now 18 months old and appears to have 2 remaining fruit close to harvest left. However the tree being young and the seasonal conditions meant that the 100 fruit set initially dropped off to just 15 in January and 2 now.
The tree in the background is an almond going into its winter dormancy.

Fruit:This is a handful sized avocado measuring about 12 cm long.

--Our "Bacon" avocado will be 2 yo in August and we harvested 2 large perfect fruit in June. They are very delicious.

Pollination: No

It's a beautiful looking tree and I'm so pleased that it's surviving... we get -7 degree frosts here! Flowered for the first time 2011, so I'm hoping for fruit next year. I'm putting a seedling avocado I've grown in a pot next to it, in case that improves pollination/fruiting.
