I live in Newcastle. Planted in ground 2 years ago. Growing slowly, but very bushy and healthy. The new growth is pretty reddish leaves. Hasn't fruited yet, but this may take a couple more years. Only 1m tall at present. I water at least weekly during the hot months, and monthly during the cooler weather if it is dry. I only feed it Seasol, Thrive flower and fruit and ocassionly fish emultion. No pest yet. Will prune when it gets to 2 metres, as I want to reach all the fruit :)

Linnie's Edible Fruits
Update: 5888 days 0hrs

Comments: -

Bought two small-leaved Jaboticabas from Daleys years ago. Very slow-growing initially, remain nice and compact in difficult soil, but fruit once or twice a year, heavily. The only problem is that this variety (I don't think there was a choice back when i purchased them) has 2-3 large seeds, and, given that the flesh sticks to the seeds, it is hard eating. Jelly is good!

Fruiting Months February and October

Planted: 2003

Height 2 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 2

Fruit Harvest: 1 kilograms per Year

First Fruited: 5 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Summer

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Mulch, compost, dynamic lifter

When I Fertilise: Yearly

Pest Control:

Nil and birds clean the fruit up if I don't remember to check at the right time.

Organic Status:Partially Organic

An attractive slow-growing pretty shrub, so far. The fruit grow on the branches  and because they are hidden birds don't bother them. From the appearance of the small white flowers to picking is about 9 weeks and I can expect fruiting at least three times a year. As the fruit ripens it turns from green, through dark red to black. There is more than I can eat or give away. Fully ripe fruit has a delicious tart taste and you can become addicted. I only pick the large grape-like fruit for it is there in plenty.  This is not a sociable fruit- you have to spit out the skin and the seed which are not edible. It is the sticky white interior that we Jaboticabans love. A common name is Brazil Grape and, like the Brazil Cherry or Pitanga, it is not well known.  Unlike the Pitanga it is not a target for birds or fruifly and so does not become a weed. Rather like a Syzigium it puts forth flushes of pinkish leaves so is ornamental in its own right.  Very compac,t it does not need pruning

Seems to be struggling in a sunny, hot position, thinking about moving them, leaves yellowing.  Have been foliar feeding.

After some good rain they are looking much happier so I shall leave them where they are.

Hi Msjekyll, Your garden looks lovely and lush. My jaboticaba the same age and size looks the same sort of colour in full sun, but it is putting on growth. They like a lot of water. There is some good discussion of the pros and cons of full sun and the cause of yellowing in this thread Diana.

Hi Chris, Looks really nice. Would you consider selling a few pieces of scion wood from your already fruiting Jabo next time you prune the trees so that I can graft onto my 2 year old? Here in cold Melbourne, this is taking even longer than average fruiting age. Thanks Pra

Waterfall's Edible Fruits
Update: 4018 days 11hrs

I picked this one up for a mere $30 when it was already 2m high, it has been identified as a Grimal. It is now planted in my front yard, the location is exposed to wind and gets plenty of sun.

Lost most leaves in winter, put them all back on in spring.

Flowered in autumn the following year, not a lot of flowers. Seems to flower after heavy rain, its flowering again nowin late autumn, hopefully it will set some fruit this time.
