Julie's Edible Fruits

I grow this every year, and there is always someone who asks 'what is that?'  It looks like a large-leaved silverbeet, with light green leaves. Very prolific - don't know why it isn't grown commercially.

It has a milder taste than s'beet, and is an annual - it grows all winter and goes to seed in summer. I think I bought the seed originally from Phoeniz Seeds, and have kept the seeds ever since.

It only gets water in spring if it is dry. Winter rainfall is enough, even though we have had a very dry winter in WA.

apricot - trevat (Grafted)

BJ11_old_address's Edible Fruits
Update: 5245 days 19hrs

Comments: -

As they are only babies I removed all the fruit as soon as it set as I want them to get their roots fully established so they can survive the summer! They are being espilared against the fence. A few have been hard hit by the storm and had some unorthordox pruning (thanks Perth storms) - but they seem to have recovered well. All their leaves have been removed for winter and I'm hoping they spring out of dormancy soon)

leavs are emerging late September. There are not many flowers - this could be due to Perth storm pruning, or insufficient chill, but a few fruit have set (obviously not enough ... one can never have too many apricots!) I always knew apricots would be a challenge in Perth!

I striped the plants of leaves in June. Hopefully they will learn that it is winter and crop in summer (maybe). The first blossom has appeared mid September 2011. It is still just waking up as of mid October 2011. There might be tiny fruitlets (just a few). It would be wonderful to get apricots in Perth (given we have far too few chill hours)

Jan 2012 - yummy, yummy, yummy ... fresh apricots are so delicious. The is no danger of an apricot crop in Perth breaking the branches of the tree, but a dozen fruit per tree is a nice treat, and so much more flavour than in the shops.

This has not been a great success story to date - I have hardly had any fruit off it, and bought a new passionfruit this year to replace it... and now the original one is loaded with fruit! (My grandfather maintained that "Sunnypash" was better than Nelly Kelly, but I haven't been able to find a Sunnypash.)

Avocado - Fuerte (B) (Grafted) 8/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2566 days 6hrs

Comments: - It's a Type B and easy to grow. It flowers a bit too early in our cooler climate so fruit set is not great and a few are cocktail avocados. I planted it for cross pollinating our Type A's - but it tends to flower a bit earlier than all of them.
It is a very vigorous and spreading tree, be warned. This pic is ours at 4yrs old.
Sand improvement is really important here, for strong healthy growth and good fruiting. I use plenty of Clay Plus, fine coir and a good quality compost (make sure the compost pH is not alkaline before adding it) and lots of mulchy things - even large pieces of our fire wood/logs, half buried under the canopy and drip line, as avocados have shallow feeder roots that need protecting. Their leaf litter stays where it falls and I use a complete fertiliser that has trace elements/minerals added.
It's important that their topsoil remains moist in our summers - so this can mean watering daily in a heatwave. Drainage is not an issue in our deep sands, which is a bonus for avocados, being prone to root rots due to "wet feet"

Question:

I have had this avocado hass planted for about 8 months now it is about 1m-1.5m tall but has not developed any fruit yet as it is still to young. The question i wanted advice on was that i have eaten hass Avocado before and like the taste but they are generally not all that large a fruit. I have seen other avocado trees around the Perth area that have a larger and slightly different shaped fruit on them (more pear shaped) and the skin of the fruit does not turn purple like the hass but remains green. Cold anyone please tell me the name of this avocado, more information about it, how it compares to the hass and best place to purchase in Perth? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
