My Edible Fruit Trees: Pummelo Trees

pummelo (Seedling) 5/10

Binwa's Edible Fruits
Update: 5476 days 4hrs

Comments: - This is one of the citrus fruits with the finest taste

Planted: 2006

Height 1 metres

Growing: In a Pot

Sun/Shade: Low Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: No

When I Fertilise: Never

Organic Status:Certified

Question: Every three to four months, my 2 pomelo trees get new leaves. But after a few weeks, leaves become clearer green, some weeks later, they start to get white to yellow spots that are enlarging until the leaf becomes mostly white. At that moment, it starts to dry out, getting wholes in the leaf, until it is completely dried out and falls off.

Is this an illness, or do I give too much water, or is the soil PH not correct ? I do not know and do not know what to do to save the 5 year old plants.

These two trees were planted 5 years ago, and they reach about 1 metre, but I presume this should be more.

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Dwarf Pummelo Nam Roi (Grafted) 7/10

Rusticular's Edible Fruits
Update: 2773 days 7hrs

Comments: - Variety unknown, lost cultural notes.  Small fruit but very juicy, and a lot sweeter than a grapefruit.  Not what I would call a dwarf, but I suppose it would probably have been a lot bigger from seed.  Good fruit but gets attacked by fruit fly.

Water Given in: Autumn

24 Sept 2013: Just bought this from Daleys and will be growing in a pot.

Oct 2014: There are about 5 fruits on this tree, and seems to be doing well. It dropped some of its fruit and has only 2 now, It is still a young plant. Did have to treat scale problem, nice new growth on tree (Nov). Fertilised with chook manure, blood and bone and dash of potash next time flowers start to form.

Pummelo - Carters Red (Grafted) 3/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 416 days 8hrs

Comments: -

The Flick's Yellow pummelo which we have has very nice fruit so we decided to try the red pummelo variety as well. Has flowered well, but low fruit set and fruit drops off while still small. Suspect inadequate water. We finally got a few fruit in 2019 but found it took a very long time to ripen. The ffruit was quite bitter and not tasty, probably because not suited to Sydney climate. Not recommended.

In 2023 have reworked the plant to multigraft - Cara Cara orange, washington navel and Lisbon lemon. Grafts growing very well and flowering already in 2024.

Our Carters red survived -5.5C last year so they can cope with frost to some extent. First flowers this year.

how do they taste in comparison to other pummelos? I know Flicks Yellow is a hybrid pummelo
Markmelb says... [3119 days 9hrs ago]
They taste really good - slightly sweeter but still with a Pomello taste & segmenting and need to peel - Handle Melbournes cold well.

I am not an expert but I am happy to take a look at your photo if you send it to my email address given at the top left. For some reason my tree this year does not look so healthy either and has only produced one fruit. Butu that could be due to the very dry spring we had end of 2015.

Flowers profusely but not much fruit set. Suspect competition from nearby trees for moisture. I have therefore movwill ed it to a new location after a good pruning. However, the tree has died back and was removed.
