GIBBERELLIC ACID-3 (forum)

Does anyone have a favourite supplier of the above mentioned chemical in Australia? There is a good source in the USA, namely
http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/GibberellicAcid.htm

Some Googling research tells me that it is virtually a must to get our Myrica Rubra seeds to germinate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yeah,
ProGibb is available as a box of 10 sachets of 2.5g at 400g/kg.
for use on agricultural crops
(thinning and/or increasing fruit size of grapes , cherries etc.)
usually avaiable from farm chem suppliers etc.

sachet (0.4gm GA x 2.5gm = 1gm GA )mix with 1 litre of water= stock soln. 1000ppm.

take half of the 1000ppm soln. and dilute 1:1 with water and you then have another stock soln. of 500ppm.
500ml @ 1000ppm
and 1 litre @ 500ppm

with these two you can make up dilutions of any strength needed.

store it in a dark place and will last a long time.

John Mc, if you cant locate any just email me.

Many thanks Speedy, I placed an order with Phoenix last night. They are short on details on quantity, but say one pack is enough to make up 20 litres, but at what strength? we'll have to wait and see.
Going by your calculations, Speedy, they would have to be sending me 20grams to make up 20lits @ 1000ppm.
I ordered two packets + postage =$17. I'm not counting on getting a great deal, as long as there is enough to germinate the Myrica Rubra seeds I'll be very happy.

yes, 20gms (of pure GA-3) with 20litres water to make 1000ppm solution.
if it's 400gm/kg powder like the one I mentioned , it would be 50gms of powder.
I reckon it may be the same concentration of powder, but "up to 20litres" will be at lower concentration solution.
ie. 20 litres /2sachets + 10 litres per sachet would mean a 100ppm solution.
you may not get much of a response at concentrations below that, so best to mix stock solutions at 500ppm and 1000ppm and dilute as needed.
ie. 1part 500ppm with 4parts water to achieve 100ppm , but you obviously can't go the other way :-)

this is all speculation though, so best to wit and see what concentration it is when you get it.
let me know when it arrives.
I'd be interested to know what concentration it it in the sachets.

It's been five days now and not even an acknowlegement of my purchase.

EDIT: Err, my bad, Phoenix tells me they haven't received payment, all fixed now, Michael tells me it's on it's way. Glad I chased that one up.

Any news on the GA3 John Mc?
I've got a few rare annona as well as the Bayberry seeds that could all use a bit of GA3.
The other supplier is Herbalistics, but theirs only goes 100mL

The amount of GA-3 from Phoenix is as expected, disappointing. There's a few grains of crystal in the bottom of a small plastic bag. The weight would be the same as herbalistics.
Luckily I bought two packets because I mixed my first packet up with 1 lit of water before contacting them. That makes the first dilution probably around 100ppm, -useless.
The second packet I'll mix into 100ml of water, hopefully to get closer to 1000ppm.

So, anyone have any good news stories about a GA3 supplier in OZ? I've just read I also have to treat Zizyphus joaoziero seed with it or dont even bother sowing the seed. ?

Mike, I found this while looking for info: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15228860903303999#preview

Bayberries and ilama may also require GA3 for decent germination rates. Junglesop definately does not require any pre treatment.

I notice most of the people posting on this page have difficulty in getting GA3. I ended up so frustrated that I got onto the manufacturers in China and pestered them until one of them would sell me a kilogram. I only wanted 5 grams but Aussie dealers wanted $75 per gram at the time. The Chinese were reasonable and I landed it in my mail box for just a bit more than I would have paid for 5 gm in Oz.

When using GA3, it is essential that it is dissolved in ethanol first and then mix it with water to the final dilution you want. Metho is OK as is Johnny Walker Red. Be damned if I would use any better whiskey than that though.

I got a bit for free but only maybe 10g.Its usefulness is limited to just the few recalcitrant and hard seeds that bedevil standard efforts.I had a little success with ilama and bayberry but don't go to 1000ppm as half this concentration of GA3 is better.Beware etoliation and never soak for more than 24 hrs and don't water with the stuff.Divide into the smallest accurate lot you can before mixing and you don't need ethanol.1g into 8 equal parts is easy enough and put in 125ml to 250ml of pure water.Wrap seeds in tissues and throw in.That is enough to do dozens of big seeds.Dont use the stuff for tomatoes and the like.

Chances are if you have to use GA3, whatever you're trying to germinate is going to struggle. The inverse is also true. For bayberry, shelling them increases germination rates dramatically.I hear talk of striation but I've never found it necessary, they're just one of those things that take a long time to germinate. Also, they come from the Yangtze which is subtropical, not really temperate. Equivalent in Australia would be Northen NSW.There's absolutely no reason to use GA3 on things like solanums or other common garden variety stuff--it would probably be counterproductive and an expensive waste of time.
