Guava - Strawberry 7/10

Strawberry Guava aka Cherry Guava aka Cattley Guava (Psidium cattleyanum)

A good "grazing" shrub when fruit are ripening. Quite ornamental, suited as a screen. Planted one of the red and one of the yellow fruited Strawberry Guavas. The yellow (photo) suffers from Qld fruit fly, but so far the red is less affected. So I'd say the red is a better shrub. ( I'll eventually get rid of the yellow)

Taste of reds vary a bit - I know of a red in somebody's yard with bigger and much yummier fruits than others I've tried, but the Qld ff think it's yummier too.

So I would give the yellow a Satisfaction rating of 3. The red I'd give 6. And if I could find one of the big yummy kind then that would be a 9.

It is classed as a weed in wet sub-tropics and wet tropics.

Update Sept 2018 - the yellow one is gradually becoming sicker looking - probably time to dig it out shortly. The red one looks fine.

As with my yellow cherry guava my strawberry guava is also trained as an espalier. It's my way of expressing myself in art.

Wild Strawberry (Cutting) 9/10

Pademelon1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3188 days 13hrs

Comments: - Not sure what cultivar of strawberry this is. Small leaves are a much lighter green than most of the varieties I usually see. Also much hardier than others; being the only variety out of about 7 that has thrived at home. Been growing it for a couple of seasons now and have had enough runners to propagate more plants, but have yet to do so. Strawberries are small (1-2cm max) but are the most flavoursome strawberries I have ever tasted. berries can be coloured from orange to crimson and are very soft. Fruit spoil quickly, so best eaten straight from the plant. Likes water, but can go dry for a while. Flowers are white, never pink.

Irish Strawberry Tree - arbutus canariensis

Kathy2's Edible Fruits
Update: 4396 days 18hrs

Comments: -

Summer 2010: This one was a gift from my sister. She picked it cause it sounded interesting (and she knew I didn't already have it!).

The flowers are pretty but it hasn't fruited yet. It does have lovely bright green new growth.

Spring 2011: lots of new growth. Since spring started it has doubled in volume!

Summer 2011: I don't think that it likes all the rain. Getting brown patches on the inside of a lit of the folliage. Fingers crossed the weather warms up soon.

Summer 2012: The browning has stopped but the growing tips were all getting droopy. I decided not to cut them off just in case and it paid off cause there was nothing wrong with them - they were flowering!!!

Planted: 2010

Height 0.75 metres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter, Seasol, Charlie Carp, worm juice (in rotation)

Pest Control: Ants seem to be farming some sort of GINORMOUS fat black bloated scale things on the hardened off branches (just where the leaves come out). I picked as many off as I could and then sprayed it with pest oil.
