I can't grow the cool high chill cherries in Brisbane except for the Acerola Cherry Tree which I am growing in a pot to bonsai it. Cherries are one of my favourites so one day I will have to either go and live in a colder climate or get myself some industrial fridges to get the 700+ chill hours they require. I also heard through the "cherry vine" that there is a chemical only available to orchardists that allow cherries to break bud without getting the chill hours.

Flemings sell the Royal Lee and Minnie Lee varieties, they only need 400 hours chilling. No idea what Brissy gets.

You can check out the photos on their web site under the commercial section or on www.davewilson.com.
He uses the terms "So-Cal" ready.

Most of the stone fruit that grows sub tropical is listed on his website as so-cal proofed.

Ps So cal is Southern California.

Correy, the chemicals to "increase" chilling hours are thiocyanate compounds (yes, they are dangerous) and some variety of mineral oils. As far as I know they can be bought by anyone.

Dwarf cherrys will be available everywhere in adelaide from mid june when the next crop of stones are relaesed for this coming year. They will grow happily in a half wine barrel and supply good fruit in most parts of SA.

Clermont is in Central Queensland, abour 3 1/2 hours west of Mackay. Thanks for your advise. Any idea about if planting 2 of similar type e.g peach and nectarine or raspberry and loganberry bush in the same hole when first plant them to ground. or would planting these in pots )
one by one has good chance of success at all. I have limited space.

I'm plannting Simone, Stella, Lapins and Sunburst on dwarfing rootstock this year.

Bunnings Belmont have 2 dwarf lapins in stock, don't grab the Lewis seedling's thy are not self fertile.

I ma prepared to use the cyanide sprays

TODAY'S POST:

"I bought 1 of the Lapin Cherry from Bunnings.
It was doing well until we got the very hot and dry spell just around Christmas-New Year last year......
the leaves of the Cherry tree all got burnt & dried up ......
it stayed leafless all summer, autumn and winter ......
this Spring (2nd week of Oct'09), the Cherry tree put out some new leaf-shoots, and was doing OK for the past 3 weeks .......
but the sudden 31 degrees on Monday killed all the new leaf-shoots .....
they are now all dried and falling off the stems......
(1)will the Cherry tree recover?
(2)am I going to get another year of leafless Cherry tree ?
(3)the Lapin Cherry is planted in a pot .... should I move it to a shady location?"

and all the leave and buds had dropped off ....

Not saying that lychees can't be grown in Victoria, of course, but the average punter isn't likely to have much success :)

My point is that Masters neither knows nor cares what will grow where. Bunnings isn't much better, with tomato and capsicum seedlings in Melbourne, a couple of months early (unless you are growing them on under shelter of course).

Knowledgeable gardeners can take advantage, however overall they do gardening a disservice as they will usually put newbies off with a few fairly predictable failures.
