Kaffir Lime

Au0rey's Edible Fruits
Update: 5334 days 7hrs

Comments: -

Had it in a pot before but it started not to do well so i planted into the ground.  It also did not do well.  After researching i found that it had iron deficiency and after feeding iron chelate, it become very healthy and even flowered and fruited.  I use the leaves (dont use the fruit at all) in Thai and Asian dishes such as tom yam soup and curries and rendangs.

So far this is the only citrus that is thriving in my garden. It is slow-growing and more than enough to meet the needs of my family.

I hardly water it eversince it was well-established and only water during hot summer days.

Planted: 2009

Height 0.9 metres

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Seasol, Citrus Dynamic Lifter

Pest Control: Occasionally I get aphids on the young juicy leaves but usually easy to deal with at the early stages of infestations. Just got to get my eyes peeled during spring new growth.

Ogeechee Lime - Nyssa ogeche

North American Tulepo Tree that produces edible fruits that can be used as a substitue for limes. Seeds were easy to germinate. It is a large tree that grows along river banks so it might not be suitable for most gardens.

The fruit is produced in small clusters of 2 - 3, it is up to 4 centimeters long, has a thick, juicy, very acidic flesh and contains a single seed.It can also be used to make a refreshing drink.

The poor thing struggled in its first couple of years, but is coming along very well now.

No sign of flowers in the previous years, but it has been setting itself up and will hopefully fruit this year, 2009/2010.

Most of our winds come from the North - hot in summer and cold in winter - and if I build up some shelter then it will never get any sun.  I'm thinking some light shadecloth might be the answer as a windbreak.

If it doesn't make good progress, I can always plant something else in its place, but hopefully I won't have to do that.

Hi Jubube, I am trying to grow one of this myself. I also live in Melbourne, I was told they will not grow well in our weather. Did you have to do anything special with your plant for it to grow so big? Thank you in advance.
JUJUBEFORSALEINMELBOURNE1 says... [5372 days 2hrs ago]
Hi Birdy, It should grows ok in Melbourne no special treatment. The first 5 years my tree most of the time not growing strong and all the fruits dropped but it gets used to the weather and started to produce fruits that stay on the trees. Just citrus fertilizer under the canopy, a bit at the time. Good luck.

Hi Jujube - what a lovely tree you have in Melbourne! You have made me happy - a local nursery (Gold Coast Hinterland) told me not to bother with it as it needs more warmth. Time to prove them wrong!

Australian Round Lime 10/10

Birdybooo1's Edible Fruits
Update: 5014 days 17hrs

Comments: -

I was going through a 'lime phase' and saw this little beauty at the nursery. I didn't know what this variety is but from the description, it seem to be ok for Melbourne weather. I put this tree into the ground next to my backyard fence. So far it has grown another half a feet and has given me heaps of flowers but only 1 fruit. This isn't a surprise as it is only the first year in the ground.

I dug quiet a large hole and placed lots of manure and compost/potting mix in the hole. The plant was slightly mounted and I placed lots of mulching around the plant (making sure none actually touches the trunk).I have sprinkled trace mineral around the drip lines and watered it with iron chelate twice in the last 1 year. The plant seem to be happy with this and isn't affected by the hot summer or cold winter.

Dwarf Lime - Tahitian (Grafted) 8/10

Birdybooo1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4992 days 3hrs

Comments: -

I purchased a full size Tahitain before realising there were dwarf varieties available. I wanted to plant them in pots so I purchased this one. This tree is now in 50L plastic pot and doing well, not as good as the ones in the ground but is growing strong.

So far, the tree has not given me any fruit. Just strong leaves and branch growth. It is a relativly small tree so it won't be a while before I see some fruit. I think the strong wind we experienced last year destroyed all the flowers on the tree and stripe some of the leaves off the branch. This year's winter has been great, no strong wind and a couple of warm days.

Update (after winter): Lots of flower buds and new leaves. I gave the plants some more sheep manure and citrus fertilise with a good watering of iron Chelate. I also put some rusting nails into the soil to give the plants a constant but slow supply of irons for green leaves.

First Fruited: 1 Years from purchase in pot

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: manure and citrus fertiliswer

When I Fertilise: When Fruiting and Spring

Pest Control: I had to spray pestoil because my plants were attacked by leaf miners! I tried to kill as many by hand as possible but it's hard when I have so many citrus plants to look after.
