Kiwifruit Gold Seedling (Seedling)

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 753 days 8hrs

Comments: -

Fruit is sweeter than the green kiwifruit so decided to grow a seedling (grafted and cuttings not available). First flowers in 2018 turned out to be female.

Also growing additional seedlings raised at home which flowered in 2019 - one with female and one with male flowers. Got some fruit in 2020 but lost to bush rats in spite of netting.

As a matter of interest, flowering in golden kiwifruit is a few weeks earlier than for the greeen kiwifruit, so can't get cross pollination between these two varieties. Also, the seedling from Daleys flowered earlier than my seedlings and so failed to get pollinated.

Planted: 2013

Height 2 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 5

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Pruned By: 40% in Summer

Pollination: No

Pest Control: Must protect from possums , bush rats and birds with netting. This is not working very well - the netting gets torn open, and I suspect the culprit is the bush rat.

Easy to propagate , as nice as (taste like) rockmelon , maybe a little more watery in flavour , cucumber relative . Easier to grow than rockmelon and lasts a couple of years with care.

Prone to fruit fly and same as tomatoes etc , always have a spare cutting growing to keep propergating . Add to salad instead of cucumber , or add to fruit salad , versatile vegetable.

Dwarf Plum Gulf Gold Tree (G) (Grafted) 5/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 3314 days 7hrs

Comments: -

Very attractive little tree, bearing largish yellow plums. These ripen later than Gulf Ruby and taste reasonably good provided you wait till fully ripe. In second year producing 30 plums even though its partner Gulfruby did not flower this year, so it looks like it's self-pollinating well. But overall the taste was not sufficiently satisfying and so removed the tree.

Kiwifruit Gold Seedling (Seedling) 5/10

Question: Any way to tell seedling gender, or must I wait for it to flower in a few years?

You have to wait for the flowers. I grew several golden kiwi seedlings from supermarket seeds. Of these two turned out to be female and one male. They pollinate successfully.

Is it iron deficient? Phil - your plants are beautiful! The colour of them says it all..

Grew so fast the wind snapped off the sappy new growth - it was a little top heavy anyway
TyalgumPhil says... [3379 days 7hrs ago]
Now a sturdy productive tree, the skin thicker and less likely to split than other cultivars, more shell-like. I find the flavour exceptional, very rich although the fruit are never quite large enough!
