Feijoa BJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5127 days 8hrs Comments: - Rescued from a throw-out these plants were very root-bound and dehydrated for about 4 years before being released into the ground in 2009. They have responded well to freedom and as of October 2010 are covered in flowers. In 2010 I was surprised to discover that these Bunnings seedlings do set the occasional fruit (albeit a bit bland). I'm hoping that the fruit improves a bit this year. Irrespective they purpose of these plants is to provide a hedge so the occasional edible fruit is just a bonus! That said, a named variety might be nice - especially if more fruit were provided (and tastier fruit). I could also practice grafting by taking cuttings to the original plants. I might remove / relocate strawberry guava and put in named feijoa. Jan 2012 - no fruit this year - but I intend to add some more feijoa to complete the hedge come autumn. They are a tough plant with interesting folige and stunning (tasty) flowers. May 2012 - an additional 6 tiny seedlings purchased to complete the hedge. The existing plants have produced a reasonable crop of somewhat grainy bubble-gum fruit. It makes good sorbet. Feijoa (Cutting) 9/10 Amanda19's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5562 days 11hrs Comments: - A Bunnings "home brand" feijoa - will likely never do anything... Had trouble with my first 4 due to wind exposure - they are naked on windward side!. They were also prone to collar rot. The two in the orchard doing much better. Nov 2010: The orchard plant is now flowering well - I think they like a bit more water than what is generally indicated (but likely decent drainage) as this one is sub surface reticulated also. It's healthy and happy, tolerates the heat here well. Jan 2011: None of the many flowers set fruit :( Planted: 2008 Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 6 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure, clay, straw, blood n bone 10% potash When I Fertilise: Winter Pest Control: None as yet. Feijoa (Grafted) HomegrownHeddibles1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 6096 days 15hrs Comments: - Variety not known, but the typical one most gardens have in the area. Just one fruit was produced in Autumn 2009, and it was delicious. Very drought tolerant, it has an upright columnar habit with leaves that grow vertically, turning their silvery undersides towards the strongest light to protect itself. The flowers are gorgeous, something like a passionfruit crossed with a fushia, red and cream in colour. We're keeping it at about 2 m high, but they can get to 6 m or so if you let them go. The fruit is ripe when it drops from the tree. The birds haven't discovered the joys of them, thankfully, but the tree is netted anyway. I'm looking forward to a much bigger harvest this coming autumn.
