Macadamia - 816 (Cutting) 9/10

Health101orgarticles1's Edible Fruits
Update: 689 days 16hrs

Comments: -

December 2007: Erect ("upright"), at least in my situation anyway. Or ie has a central leader / just one main vertical trunk, without any big side branches. I want minor side branches to branch out at right angles / 90° for at least enough room for a comfortable and unbreakable foothold for climbing, to avoid the branch peeling off and breaking at a weaker 45° etc angle. I can do that by putting a clothes peg etc on the young trunk and also against the new young branch, so that it grows out at a 90° angle instead of about 45°. West facing, and against very busy 4 lane asphalt / blacktop road, and concrete footpath. Full sun now, but for some of the first 11 years was totally or slmost fully shaded by my local council's free donated Acacia decurrens, originally a tubestock seedling. My great and maybe first and successful experiment in companion planting, and also nitrogen-fixing. I also put a large swale or berm, from a Vietnamese next door neighbour's new house excavation, although including some very big and small concrete blocks that I said that I did not want, some of which were put back at their partly built front entrance. First young nuts noticed after 12 years, in Dec 2019. It might have fruited before, among the acacia's branches, in its full or almost full shade.

Macadamia - Bush Nut (Seedling) 10/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 1517 days 11hrs

Comments: -

Produces good crop of nuts each year. Handsome tree with beautiful pink flower racemes.

Top pruned the tree to half size so as to be able to reach nuts. This resulted in a much denser lower tree.

Fruiting Months April

Planted: 2004

Height 5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Fruit Harvest: 100 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 4 Years from Seed

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

When I Fertilise: Never

Pest Control:

Main problem are Rozellas and cockatoos - when young nuts are forming, they destroy every single one of the large crop of nuts. Must put netting over nuts within reach so as to save some of the crop.

Some nuts affected by macadamia nut borer.

If against a driveway, eg against a car's paint, and passengers skin, it has too sharp leaves, at least if not pruned enough.

Rat bait and traps. But as the photo shows, hungry rats in mid or early December will crawl high up the tree and eat immature small green nuts.

Comments: - The "Lotsa Nuts" plants. Doing well here - need some pushing along with plenty of water and feeding. They need the alkalinity managed also - but may actually be displaying "delayed greening" with new growth I suspect? (not uncommon with our Aust. natives)

Macadamia G6 (Cutting)

Markmelb's Edible Fruits
Update: 1838 days 16hrs

Comments: -

This is the so called Home Beauty G6 Macadamia

Planted Cutting which I think may be a Birdwood plant? Has kicked on well with several flushes already

2nd year in it has stopped growing height but is thickening up and growing branches - leave down low are quite long and some grow weird and twisted but leaves are getting smaller towards the apex - anyone know what causes gnarly twisted leaves? could it be bugs munching new growth as leaves form?

Worked out twisted leaves are due to cold but has acclimatised now and is holding 20 nuts March 2019 photo - tree seems to have topped out at 4.5 to 5mt which it is supposed to.do? Lets see? 2020 should be a way bigger crop?

Planted: 2013

Pollination: Cross Pollination

Question:

Anybody know what causes  Macca leaves to grow twisted and Gnarley looking??

Jan28 2016 pic growing well but stil twisty leaves - getting shorter leaves as it matures

Maybe it is more subtropical than a warm temperate zone.  Likely it wasn't protected enough

Too much hard work for the value of the nut.... will stick to something that likes arid conditions until we can actually be there full time to care for the more delicate

Where are you fiona as I have an A16 growing well against a north facing brick wall and doing quite well here in Melb and Macca similar to Pinkaliscious in a more open spot doing well too -- see my edibles - markmelb
Fiona11 says... [2532 days 10hrs ago]
Thanks Mark. Mine in Streaky Bay SA. I think north wind was a factor and we don't have the conditions yet (shelter / heat mass) to grow subtropical at this time.
