Update March 2021 - After a long drought, one excellent summer rainfall.... I have a good crop of Walnuts.

Photo taken 2009, No rain Nov-Jan09, top dressed 09, No nuts yet.

It's now Oct 2016 and have updated photo.  It been fruiting since 2013 (March) and have germinated the seeds (90% strike).  I'm amazed at it's growth burst after dormancy, sometimes 2m in one season.  This tree has been cut back every winter for scionwood.

var. Chandler.  While I got walnuts from this plant, I never really got it to grow well.  It ended up with a root rot fungus which I successfully eliminated but it never was happy in a pot.  My recommendation is that although you can grow them in Sydney, its best to plant these trees in the ground.  I ended up giving this plant to someone who has the room to let it grow. The closely related pecans, though, are doing well in their pots.

Planted on nature strip to give it space to become a larger tree and keep away from other trees and veg which may be inhibited by it. In hot dry position so may struggle but seems happy so far. Going to focus on creating a good watering solution for it

Slow to get going, trace elements helped out as well as mulch as they dont like dry  hot roots and they are not quite big enough to shade their roots. the mulch really did help.
