I'd suggest querying Yalca about the fig - I asked about a pleach (blood peach) that was out of stock and was offered one that was a bit younger (intended for sale the following year) at a reduced price. I'd expect that they may have something but it just wasn't listed for sale.

Panachee? That stripey fig fig with the red flesh? Wow. I'd love one of those myself - I haven't seen those for sale anywhere. Would you mind telling me who you're getting them from? I'm in Melbourne so maybe it would be easier to approach the wholesaler myself?

Have you fig masters found a variety that ripens really early (or in low heat). The best one I have found so far is White Genoa, not especailly tasty but ripens early for me. It's the only fig I've had fruit so far where all the fruit ripened before Winter. Most varieties I only get about 50% of the crop ripened, some much less % than that.

I do have a few local varieties I've sneaked cuttings off from around town which are early in their original locations so pretty hopefully about those. Who knows what varieties they are though, they would be ancient

I bet there's a zillion varieties hanging over fences around the old suburbs of Melbourne just asking for a sneaky cutting to be taken in Winter (after you have sampled a fruit in late Summer :D ).

There's one awesome huge tree I've been keeping my eye on over the years but unfortunately didn't get to taste the fruit yet so I think I'll just make a preemptive strike and get a cutting

Peter if you have one already going I'll take you up on the offer unless you were planing on planting it out yourself. Just don't want to cause any change in your plans. Its almost the right time of year where I can cut scions if you want something like avocado or sapotes. Some of the local fig trees I got cuttings from last year maybe early but I won't know until I can recheck the mother trees during the growing season

Peter I bought a Black Genoa once but it turned out identical to a Brown Turkey I have so I guess it was mislabeled, in any case whatever I have is very late and I only get about half the fruit here. I get most of the fruit from Excel and all the fruit from White Genoa so that's about the time frame I need to look at as far as early croppers go. ie nothing later than Excel. I can go to Jantina's it's just up the road a bit from here, she needs to see our baby boy anyway :)

I took a leaf off one of the local ancient varieties of figs growing in Portland yesterday and compared to to all the figs I have, the fig fruits themselves looked like brown turkey so far except a bit more advanced for this time of year. But as far as the leaf goes it didn't match with any named varieties I have including brown turkey, not even close. So that was interesting. The town is 170? years old and I'd guess there are fig varieties around that have remained in the local area near that age so it's interesting stuff.

So far I've definitely got 2 and possibly three different old varieties from town and I know where there's 4 other different trees, 3 of which I should be able to grab cuttings from at some stage.

Peter I'm not sure I could identify an elite fig as I've never tasted one that wasn't ridiculously good :). Always surprised that there isn't a fig tree or 5 in every yard. Such an easy tree to grow and propogate and prune. Is there even a single bad point?.

No, Jason - there is no bad point in having a fig tree. I have six varieties in my tiny inner city courtyard without a lot of sun. I have one cutting in the ground that is over 2M tall; the rest are in pots. I will also make room if I can find a Blue Provence. :)

How would u determine it, by the colour ov the fruit.. I've been waiting 2 years so I guess its worth the risk. You'd have a few figs In your backyard.
That w.a I got from you has put a few fruit on. Do u usually pull them off when there at such a young age. ?

yea the fruit is the best way of telling
they probably will be small trees/young cuttings and as long as the mother
trees havent come from the rfssa orchard
then they should be ok. getting panachee from the same place but they
say they will be another 6 weeks.
will you be able to pickup from
mile end.

Anyone heard from Jantina, wonder if she got that fig?. My white Genoa is going awesome this year. Easily my most powerful growing fig. I have a mystery fig fig with GIANT heart shape leaves. Dunno what variety it is but I think I got it from Daley's many years ago. Point is its finally growing decent and will fruit this year but its a very distinctive leaf compared to Amy other fgig I have.

Hi Jantina nah I didn't know what you were up to yet :) I'm not so busy I've been to the mount a million times since then. I will search some emails to see if I still have your phone number before I go over there next time. Is your garden surviving this ridiculous Summer? mines getting pretty toasted and I'm watering a lot more than I have in the past, not helping too much. The little man is growing but he resists crawling or being on his tummy. Just wants to sit up all the time or try to stand.. only does what he likes not what he should.. He looks ok, slightly bent in the head but most babies seem to be if you look at them long enough :p,

Here's a link to a picture
http://i60.tinypic.com/xp7b5v.jpg
I think the most strange thing turned out to be his eyes. I totally thought they would be brown but they are like a nothing colour. Just kind of like steel.

the garden is alive but a big mess as we are laying paths and a dripper system to free up some time and energy. The trees are doing reasonably well but quite a lot of fruit has been dropped on the super hot days and drying winds. The lucuma is very slow but still growing and looking very healthy and hardly been watered . Look forward to seeing you all next time.

I know where there's a similar striped fig in an old garden but it may not be that one. It could be 100 years old

I had a cape white a few days ago. Geez it's a good fig. I thought it was mainly used for jam, but it was full of honey and sweet. Looking forward to getting into the main crop soon!

I'm close to giving up on growing figs. Mine seem to always end up with rust, leaves drop and then I'm back to square one.

First fruit on my Blue Provence from Yalca is unimpressive, if it is a Blue Provence. Sour and a little dry; may be I left it too long. Thin skin filled with pulp. Did not turn blue. Hoping for better fruit next year.

Hi vict, Happy New Year.- no; mine's a Brown Provence, though Yalca labelled it Blue. There are more figs on the tree so hopefully they will miraculously discover their identity and find their true colour. Since it is also covered in Mosaic virus I think I will get rid of it if it does not perform better next year.

I got a Blue Provence fig from Diggers ~18 months ago. This is the first fig from it, picked today.

It doesn't look at all like I expected, in fact, aside from the enormous size of the fig (it's on a dinner plate) it's more like my St Dominique than any other fig in both shape and flavour.

What do people more familiar with Blue Provence figs think? Is it the real thing or have I been sold something else in its place?

If so, I'd love to get some cuttings of the real thing to try to grow.

ETA, I've eatcn it now and with the shape, colour and taste of the fig, I'm now sure it's a St Dominique. The Blue Provence is not solidly back on my wish list and I'm disappoitned as I was so looking forward to Blue Provence figs and I already have a St Dominique.
