If you want a fruit tree with thorns there are a number of citrus - bush lemons for example have long sharp thorns.

If you want something fast, until you get trees up and growing, maybe plant nettles where they are likely to walk, and outside windows. That would give them a shock!

Also,there are always roses.

Try trifoliata or flying dragon citrus rootstock, maybe a few roses and some big thorny pineapples if you can find them. Some euphorbias have irritating sap when brushed against but that may be a bit dangerous. I also use the japanese wineberry =Rubus phoenicolasius. but only in poorer soils where it wont escape into the wild. The related keriberry tends to be too vigorous.

Bougainvillea is fast, thorny, and decorative. Bush lemon seedlings can be very thorny, mine has thorns 3-6cm long, and is fast growing too. A hedge of finger-limes could be a deterrent too - not overly long thorns, but hundreds of small needles.

I love the Finger Lime idea too - But why not put up a picket fence with the colonial point and keep your side gate locked - I have no problem and live on a busy footpath - but my trees - Avos etc look pretty ordinary from a distance - what are your neighbors tea leafing?

I think Dendrocnides moroides interplanted with Salacca wallichiana, thorny naranjillas,Calamas motti and Calamas radicalis intertwined would deter intruders.

Are you sure the neighbours steal and not the birds - did you see them?
I would rather tell them off or give them a cutting that they can plant their own.

I laughed to see so many people with ideas to keep out poaching neighbours. The neighbours can't be very nice people at all.

I favour the suggestions already put forward about planting thorny citrus; there are probably several varieties to choose from, they grow quickly, they can be trimmed back against the fence and at least you can use the fruit (the neighbours will no doubt harvest the trees from their side).
