Comments: -

Very slow growing, delicate tree. Withstands cold Sydney nights reasonably well. Has produced flowers every year but only in winter and so the immature fruit drops off in the early years. But finally got a crop in 2017. Sweet fruit but not much flesh, large seed.

I would love it if it ever grew big, because the trees look so special. From Daleys Oct 2015. No growth when photo taken Jan 2017, but by Sep 2018 it has about doubled in size.

Jabos wanted their soil to be on the acidic side like the blueberries. I used azalea potting mix and fert and alternate it with dyna lifter to perk this turtle like movers a bit quicker. So far its working.

Jaboticaba (Seedling) ^6/10

Comments: - When it arrived from Daley's, ALL the leaves had burnt tips which was disappointing. We had had a heat wave so it was probably caused by this. I transferred it to a pot, blood and bone and 100% organic compost. Moved to my verandah. It received sunlight ~6hours, full sun ~2-3 hours. Daily watering. The weather turned, became extremely cold and eventually settled on ~40C again. During this time, the leaves seemed to get lighter in color but the burning didn't worsen. The plant didn't seem too happy and I was worried it would die. I moved it to ~2hours full sun (ie less) and I've noticed I have finally had 2 sets of new leaves, both a beautiful darker color and a softer texture. This plant also has shallow roots. I suspect it likes a lot of water and not much sun.

I've since repotted this to a larger size. It is now ~0.7m tall. I added organic cow manure and Powerfeed solution. It's also receiving ~4hours of full sun light which it tolerates well and isn't burning from.

Comments: - Exotic, unique, different. It reminds me of a sun drenched far away place called Brazil where samba is the rule. Growing as an informal espalier at the moment making it even more unusual than the normal bushy multi-trunked jabo that I have seen at Daley's nursery at Kyogle.

Jabos like their soil and fert on the acidic side like the blueberries to keep their growth at a quicker pace interspersed with dyna lifter. Rain water is their favorite drink too.

16-11-17 Just repotted my Jabos into a slightly bigger container. They responded pretty quickly within days with new numerous gorgeous growth. My potting mix recipe ; azalea potting mix, perlite, pine bark, peat moss in equal proportion plus a sprinkling of azalea pert. Watered them with a weak solution of seasol. They are situated on the eastern side of the house about 1 meter away from the brick wall. They are expose to the morning sun from 7:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. avoiding the harsh afternoon sun. They are very happy looking brazilians indeed.

05-10-19 Growing vigorously again here again in Melbourne after application of Gyganic organic fertilizer last month. Probably 3 more years before i can see any of those spectacular flower.

I picked this one up for a mere $30 when it was already 2m high, it has been identified as a Grimal. It is now planted in my front yard, the location is exposed to wind and gets plenty of sun.

Lost most leaves in winter, put them all back on in spring.

Flowered in autumn the following year, not a lot of flowers. Seems to flower after heavy rain, its flowering again nowin late autumn, hopefully it will set some fruit this time.

Comments: - One of my favorite trees - hardy, aesthetic, compact, and delicous fruits.  The large leaf version tens to be less wind resistant than the small leaved version.
