Rain,rain,rain

    61 responses

VF starts with ...
After reaching drought like conditions with about 5-6months of next to no rain here in SEQld, almost 6months worth has fallen in last 6 weeks (just over 1200mm for me) - but the plants are loving it. Exciting to see plants that were struggling, suddenly be covered with abundant new growth - very noticable on citrus, apple, lychee, jakfruit, banana and even sapodilla. Growing fruit like persimmon, citrus, guava, papaya all plumping up well now - should be in for nice autumn/winter crop. Only downfalls being loss of babaco tree (with 17 fruit :( ), all tomato plants now, and some veg. - also not much fun gardening in pouring rain, although hasn't totally stopped me and I'm sure I'm thought of as that crazy lady always doing something with her plants rain, wind or shine (not hail :)! ) Hope others are having good results too.

Yes VF the rain is making a big difference to all the plants and trees that have been thirsty for so long. Vegies and herbs are doing well except for my tomatoes and cucumbers mainly because the soil they are in is not draining well. The tomatoes are splitting when ripe due to excess water uptake.

Nice to know VF.. Most of my young trees are also putting on new growth since rain started here... But yesterday first dragon fruit flower bud is now dropped due to non-stop rain here, couple of new growth tips on same tree also rotted due to rain..

Diego, glad your vegies are going well - alot of mine has either rotted or has powdery-mildew. I will try some tropical types of tomato next summer and see how they go (thai pink egg & tropic).

Db, sorry about your first DF flower. Hopefully now that it's started flowering, it won't be too long before more are produced. I have some new cuttings from DF farm I've just potted up, and I've had to trim a small bit of rotten tip off one too. They're now living in the laundry - probably not an option for you.

My carambola has been flowering like mad for weeks, but they too are all dropping off as no chance for pollination.

I agree, the amount of growth is outstanding, heaps of juicy new leaves on all citrus and no leaf miner, the rain must be keeping them at bay. I also couldn't believe this rain has brought a Paxton's Prolific custard apple out of dormancy, I gave it up for dead but left it in it's pot because the stem was still green under the bark, and bazinga, it's now shooting new leaves like it should have back in spring.

The rain has caused an unseasonal push of flowering as well. Things like Loquats, Macadamia, Wampi with ripening fruit on , pears and mandarins, which have fruit developing to name a few.
Db, see if you can get your hands on a Vietnam DF, the fruit is normally large, and pink/white inside. Mine weigh on average 1kg. I posted one on here last year on the scales at 1.1kg

We have had the driest summer in the 15 years I've been gardening. Real big struggle just to keep things alive at the moment. And yet another week of mid 30s with no rain in sight coming up. Buying water in tankers is getting pretty old too. Oh well I guess it'll rain sooner or later.

I'd like that but we don't get rain from qld down here. Only from the bite or a bit of a sprinkle from Antarctic blasts. Melbourne is only 400km away but they get a lot more rain because of the urban rain effect, they have LOTS of self generated storms in Melbourne. Quite lucky really plus its 3c warmer day and night than Victorian should be in Melbourne. Which makes it more like middle NSW

Know how you feel Jason, we got nothing at all from Rusty which makes us 3 months without decent rain & its still over 30 every day! Sick to death of constant watering to keep things alive! Trying Soil Solver, but our soily sand is so moisture retardant it takes heaps to make any difference & it aint cheap!

That's surprising Mike (about your rainfall). I thought (obviously wrongly) that we further south were just getting an extension of the wet from the tropics.

Brendan, have you ever thought about growing rice ? ;)

Hope you all south and west get some liquid sunshine soon too.

Sorry Db, nearly missed your question. In ground I have common red and white, and a hybrid pink. Thorny yellow ready to be planted when ground dries out a bit. Currently attempting to strike a purple, a red hybrid and a lemonade tasting white.

It just wont go away. With the rain and an awful workload I hadnt been out in the garden for a few weeks and its now a jungle of grasses and weeds. Oh well, at least its keeping the top soil in place. I've had much more than the official guages - around 900mm in three days at one stage, and a few more feet since the big low. And they say there might be another on the way? My Cape Plum has gone nuts though and has set lots of fruit after being blown flat a few weeks back and the panama berry is slowly recovering from being smashed by the drought. Have to try to hack the tubers back though. Just a few dry days would be nice so I can get out there with the poison to get rid of a few of the rampant things (white root attack!)

No rain here either. Just continuous hot days over 30 degrees, no rain for over 3 months and the sand is also water repellant.

About a week ago there were some storms passed by about 10km away in the northern suburbs, but they missed where I live so it is just as dry as ever.

As it's impossible to water, and the experts predict that the current climatic conditons are going to continue, it might be an idea for people here to reconsider the spectrum of things they are growing and plant more drought tolerant species.

I think I have expressed this view before on this forum; that Australia needs a grand scheme to take just some of the huge supply of water, that falls in the north during summer, south. No matter the cost nor the time it takes. Its not likely to happen because governments don't look much further ahead than their periods of incumbency. We need people of vision.

Diego for over 100 years there have been grand visions of greening the desert, making northern Australia the food bowl of Asia through huge dams and agricultural ventures. The huge dams could also be piped to the southern areas that need water.
The Ord to Perth and Burdekin to Brisbane proposed pipelines would deliver water at about the same cost as merlot. The showcase project, the Ord has been a dismal failure in spite of good soils.Cost/benefit puts it in the red.The tyranny of distance, bad soils, poor infrastructure, seasonal extremes, pest and disease profusions will cause many more failures in the next 100 years.

Today could be our first rain-free day in at least a month. We certainly dont need a Burdekin-Brisbane pipeline, just better water management. In years like this we could send water up north - the river looks like a horizontal waterfall most days.

Well we are finally getting some moisture in Sydney albeit a London style 'rain that stays in the air'. Such a fine drizzle that the warmth of your body can keep you dry while walking in it. At least it slows down the evaporation and I have fig trees laden with fruit; I don't want them wet right now.

We're dry as we've been for a while. Just a few barely measurable showers amongst some of the hottest weather I can remember. I was hoping the big low tracking down the coast would push onshore, but no luck! so now just hoping the heat over the next few days triggers some good storms. I'm not holding out though.

I worry that the rain will spoil the fruit.

Yes, rain very welcome...a couple of hundred mls this week is fantastic after a very dry summer. Total rain for Feb was 23.6mm, (long-term median is 149mm and mean is 220mm). Combined Jan. and Feb. total 124.6mm this year compared to 1131.6mm same time last year. Guess one up side is that the lawn didn't need much mowing until now. :) Actually, the lack of rain really highlighted poor areas of the yard that need a lot more organic matter added, and the successes, some surprising (eg cherimoya's coped much better than atemoya's).

The weather seems to get more off kilter every year.

Doesn't rain when it is supposed to, and dumps the bank when it isn't supposed to. Global warming?

Yes, David; we've had good rain and it's still wet outside. The forecast is for more rain. Must take advantage of it :)
