The Daley News

Having watched the rollinia ripen on the stock tree Rolliniain the poly house for the last couple of months,  we took the plunge the other day and picked it,  it was perfect and delicious,  the best we have ever tasted.  Lemon meringue pie was mentioned by each of us.  The flesh is thick, sticky , sweet and lemony the large fruits are perfect for sharing.
Spring has already sprung here in the northern rivers , peaches, plums and nectarines are bursting into blossom and the bees buzzing around the flowers working their magic.
Now is the time to pick blood oranges as they colour up after the cool of winter.  Eureka lemons are also in their prime, my tree has the largest and juiciest lemons on it that I have ever seen.

Bare Root Fruit Trees KatieBare Rooted Fruit Trees

We have had a wide selection of bare rooted fruit tree to choose from this winter,  now is the perfect time to be planting all deciduous fruit trees.
A bare rooted tree is a plant that has been dug up out of the ground while it is dormant; it comes without a pot or potting mix to grow into and will need either planting or potting as soon as you receive it.
Bare rooted trees need to be  pruned by about 1/3 , this is because when the tree has been dug up the roots have been pruned, and the top needs pruning to balance this root pruning.
The roots of  bare rooted plants need to be kept moist from the time they are dug to the time they are planted.  Do not leave bare rooted plants sitting out in the sun or allow them to dry out.
If you are not ready to plant your tree in the ground pot it up into good quality potting mix, your tree will be happy then until you are ready to plant it into the ground.

Planting your tree

Nectarine Flowering in WinterIf possible plant your tree as soon as you get it home.  Your tree will need to be planted at the same depth that it was originally in the ground, never deeper.  Look for a change in colour at the base of the stem; this will indicate the ground level.  Dig a big hole for it and remember do not leave your tree lying in the sun while you are busy digging, keep it in a shady and moist spot.
Spread the roots out in a natural fashion, if necessary a little mound of soil in the centre of your hole will help you to hold the tree at the correct planting height.  Back fill with soil, gently shaking the trunk of your tree as you back fill will help the soil to fill between the roots. Water in.  If the tree feels loose in the ground place a stake in the ground well away the root zone and loosely tie the tree to the stake.  Do not fertilize your tree until it begins to break dormancy in the spring time. Mulch well with organic mulch like Lucerne hay, this will break down and feed your tree; it needs to be kept away from the trunk of the tree.

Pecans are a fabulous tree, originating in North America where they have been enjoyed by the Indigenous American Indian tribes for more then 8000 years,  the names of the tribal groups are acknowledged in the names of the pecan varieties.  Apache, Sioux, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Kiowa, Mohawk  etc.  The name pecan also comes from the American Indian word Pacane, meaning "nut so hard as to require a stone to crack".  Modern selections of pecan nuts do not require the stone as they have been selected for their softer shells and larger nuts.  The Mohawk is the largest of the nuts with the softest shell making it a fantastic choice for the home orchard.  The Shoshoni is also a fabulous choice for the home garden as it has excellent crops of good quality nuts.  Pecans are split into two groups A and B, if your selection includes one of each of these groups they will cross pollinate and provide a bumper crop.  If however you do not have room for two pecans trees there are some which are self pollinating that will happily crop on their own.  These include the Cherokee, Pawnee, Mohawk, Shoshoni, Tejas and Cape Fear.
Pecans are large attractive trees so you will need to have room for a 20-30 metre high deciduous tree.   They are spectacular in the spring when they push new growth, the trees light up with their luminescent lime green new foliage.  The nuts are delicious eaten straight out of hand, if you don't happen to have a nut cracker at hand just squeeze two nuts together in your hand and one will always crack.  The nuts widely used in confectionary and the famous and fabulous pecan pie.
