Sounds like you have a very successful mandarin tree there. For some unknown reason my mandarin produced no fruit this year but every other year it has. I get fruit mainly in summer though.

satsuma mandarin (Grafted) 10/10

Yum's Edible Fruits
Update: 645 days 6hrs

Comments: -

Mandarin Silverhill (a satsuma selection) grafted onto a troyer citrange rootstock.

This is an almost pest free, small tree with fragrant flowers and delicious seedless fruit.  It's frost hardy and fruits early which makes it an excellent choice for Canberra.  The fruit is so good that I'm surprised i have never seen satsuma mandarins in the shops (or even one satsuma mandarin tree).  They look a lot like small tangelos.

Our tree has survived being almost ringbarked twice by our pet rabbit and drought.  However, last season i watered it regularly, and consequently had an excellent crop of good sized fruit.

I am looking forward to more vigorous growth once the bark has fully regrown.

I'm not really sure when i planted it.  1999 is just a good guess, but probably earlier.

Fruiting Months March and April

Planted: 1999

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: varies, compost, rabbit manure and urine, possum manure, cow manure, blood and bone with potash, proprietary organic fertilisers and i have used osmocote citrus food some years ago.

When I Fertilise: Spring

Pest Control:

0ccasionally i have seen leaf miner and i simply removed the affected leaves.  I remove most orchard butterfly caterpillars, leaving one or two for interest.  Rabbit mesh kept the rabbit at bay.  Scale is removed by hand.

Question:

If I plant other varieties of satsuma mandarins or other citrus, will i get seeds in my mandarins?

Lemon - Meyer (Grafted) 9/10

KitschWitch's Edible Fruits
Update: 650 days 22hrs

Comments: -

This tree is about two years old now and has been fruiting for the past 2 months--around 50 fruit altogether. During the first year I removed all of the flowers so the tree would put its energy into growth. There have already been more flowers so we should have another flush of fruit in a few months.

The fruit are large, not as bitter as traditional lemons but great for most purposes. My children like to suck on them (but then they also suck on trad. lemons).

The tree is very healthy, no discoloured leaves. We feed it with compost and it also gets a good share of urine during the warmer months! I might have put some trace element mix on it at some stage and would do so again.

it is growing in front of a cream-painted north facing wall, which suits it well. I will try a traditional lemon soon to see if that also goes well in the frosty Canberra climate.

Lemon - Eureka (Grafted) 10/10

Oriente's Edible Fruits
Update: 997 days 8hrs

Comments: -

I got my Eurika tree as people told me it would not grow in cold climates. Guess what? It grew beautifully. It is now my biggest citrus tree and I prune it severely.

Dwarf Orange - Navelina (Grafted) 9/10

Oriente's Edible Fruits
Update: 997 days 9hrs

Comments: -

It is a beautiful tree and the oranges are a striking orange colour.

I love my trees to look like standard trees so I prune them severely when they are young. In the first years I only care about shape.

In spite of my pruning the Navelina produced a lot of fruit.

Lemon - Meyer (Grafted) 8/10

Oriente's Edible Fruits
Update: 997 days 9hrs

Comments: -

The first citrus tree I bought when moving to my house. At first it did not go well as Meyer did not like the position. It looked terminally ill. I dug it out and replanted it in a different position (after having a look at where my neighbour's Lemon tree was). Now it's doing OK, still small but...alive and producing fruit. To be on the safe side I bought another Meyer which was planted in a pot.

I do not care very much about the fruit at this stage since I am interested in the shape of the trees and I prune them all the time.

Not too keen on this tree. Fruit is still sour. The good thing is that it does not mind Canberra winters. I covered it during the first years but for the last 2 years it has been totally unprotected.
