Tastes of Thailand

Thai FruitsOne of the best things about travelling is visiting the markets to see all the different flavours and colours that are available.  On a recent visit to Thailand I was keen to visit the fresh produce markets and taste the local fruits.  It was the wet season and many of the local tropical fruits Rambutanwere in season and there was plenty to choose from.  My favourite was the rambutan, not only does this fruit look like a wild and exotic but it is also delicious.  Inside the red hairy skin is sweet translucent flash that resembles the lychee to which it is closely related. Rambutans can also be found stuffed with Longanpineapple and preserved in syrup. Longans were also being sold by the bunch and this delightful fruit has a light aromatic flavour that is a little more spicy than a lycheeNam Doc Mai Mango
Thai style mango's were available from all the fruit stalls and the sellers were delighted when I asked if they were Nam Doc Mai's, I was given free samples to try of many fruits including Santols, Langsats and Salaks. The Salak is also called the snake fruit after its scaly brown textured skin, it grows on a highly ornamental palm tree which is covered is spines but this Salakdoes not detract from its attractive appearance.  The fruits are rich and nutty with a hint of tropical fruit salad flavours, they are easy to peal and have a dry smooth texture.
Purple mangosteen were also in season, this delicious fruit is often called the queen of fruits because it is so good.  The thick woody dark purple shell encloses Purple Mangosteensegments of exquisite juicy white flesh which is sweet yet slightly acid.  Like many tropical fruits the salak, mangosteen and rambutan do require tropical humid climates to thrive, the rambutan in particular is very difficult to grow outside of the tropics.  We have some of these tempting tropical fruits coming on for sale so if you are in the tropics see our web pages for more information and for our prepurchase option.

Flame Tree

Flame TreeThe Flame Tree Brachychiton acerifolius could easily be considered to be Australias most beautiful ornamental flowering tree, when they commence flowering in the rainforests around Kyogle the hills are dotted with scarlet red trees that glow from a distance but it is when you are up close to them that their vibrant beauty can be truely appreciated.  Flame trees are quite often planted with Silky Oaks for a golden compliment to their red flowers or with purple Jacarandas a combination which I just adore.  Flame trees are both hardy and versatile trees, however give them plantly of space in your garden as they do mature into large specimens.

Whats in a Pot

MegatubeIn an attempt to keep the cost of rising freight down we are offering some of our products in a smaller pot size, the term MT on our price list refers to the Mega Tube which is a 90 mm root pruning pot.  These have root training ridges inside and open bottoms to prevent the curling of root systems.  We are also offering a range of our native tubestock species in these larger pots as a second option.
