Avocado 10/10

Bizibee's Edible Fruits
Update: 172 days 16hrs

Comments: -

I grew this tree from seed 15 years ago while I was living in Sydney. When I moved back to Melbourne I brought it with me. It ended up dying of, I was so dissapointed. I left it in its the pot (it was over a metre high) and forgot about it. About a year later I went to clean the area behind the shed, I noticed that my avocado tree sprouted again. It had 40cm shoot coming out the bottom. I left it in the pot for a few years and then two years ago I decided to plant it in the grown and it just took off. Now it is over 2 metres high and very bushy, lush and green (no fruit yet). I just water and fertilize it now and again in summer and thats all. If it never produces fruit it doesn't worry me, I just love the look of it.

Avocado - Wurtz (A) 6/10

Paltahead's Edible Fruits
Update: 186 days 17hrs

Comments: -

I love avocado or palta as I call them.  My little tree is a dwarf and is a straggly looking, small weeping tree hidden between a camellia and an Aussie hibiscus bush. It is viritually sheltered and hidden inbetween these 2 metre tall shubs. This tree has almost died on a few occasions from waterlogging or sunburn. It is almost three years old and yet to produce a fruit. I have moved it three times and finally it seems happy where it is. Right now it is starting to produce lots of flower buds and hoping we may get our first 'paltita' this year. Heaps of new leaf growth, increase in size, and had lots of flowers which have  mostly all dropped off.  Also discovered another avo type growing ferociously from rootstock so pulled it off.

Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted)

Cam's Edible Fruits
Update: 386 days 15hrs

Comments: -

The Hass variety is the third and last tree for my avocado collection. All the three plants are still in their pots but I will be planting them along side each to cover one side of the shed. The trees in return will get afternoon sun protection from the shed in the first couple of years. A win-win deal.

I will plant the trees about 1.5 metres apart so hopefully they will dwarf each other as advocated by some gardening gurus.

Avocado - Bacon (B) (Grafted)

Cam's Edible Fruits
Update: 524 days 16hrs

Comments: -

Although Melbourne's weather may not need both type A and B avocado plants to help set fruits but surely it'll benefit and besides you can't have too many avocados.

Bacon is said to be one of the most cold tolerant avocado plants so it is very suitable to grow in Melbourne and that it produces fruits relatively early, say in its third or fourth year.

Avocado - Secondo (A) (Grafted)

Cam's Edible Fruits
Update: 524 days 16hrs

Comments: -

Perhaps it is not a wise choice to plant a Secondo in Melbourne as may not tolerate the long cold months down here. Nevertheless, I am happy with the purchase, how could I resist it when the fruit is said to be of excellent quality and that its parents are Sharwil and Hass? I will transplant the plant to a bigger pot and plant it out in the ground next year when I have more time to tend them.

Once in the ground, the strategies to keep my avocado plants in good health is to:

* plant the trees on a raised bed to prevent root rot,

* cover the plant with with shade cloth for sun/wind/frost proction in its first few years, and

* mulch and feed the plants with good stuff such as comfrey leaves,  liquid fertiliser and blood bones. Because avocado trees acidic soil, avoid feeding them any matter that may raise the PH level such as mushroom compost and  seaweeds.

Hi Jason, did you buy your Avocado from Melbourne? If so, could you let me know where? Thanks in advance, Cam

Avocado - Bacon (B) (Grafted) 5/10

Roch's Edible Fruits
Update: 636 days 3hrs

Comments: -

This Bacon was from Daley's I bought some time late last year. But died due to root rot. I think the plant was too young to aclimatise to the Melbourne's cold weather, even though it was in a pot. My suggestion is either try to get plants from your area or if you are getting from interstate, climatise it well. Also, too much love will certainly kill it. I now have another Bacon, 2 Hass, and a Pinkerton doing very well.

No pruning, unless its really needed.
