My Edible Fruit Trees: Gooseberry Trees WA

Choose Your State: ALL NSW QLD VIC WA ACT NT SA TAS NT

English Gooseberry

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1809 days 9hrs

Comments: - Removed. Grew fine but there was nowhere near enough chill to ever get flowers. Probably very few, if any, places in WA that might get fruit from these. Not sure why the nurseries keep selling them here.

Cape Gooseberry (Seedling) 10/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1815 days 14hrs

Comments: - This is a superior seed from Thailand. The fruits are much bigger than our usual backyard varieties. Love this fruit because it tastes great and also comes in it's own fruit fly proof case. It fruits over winter also - providing variety when there is not much else.
Reasonably regular feeding and watering gives better tasting fruit. I plant in semi-shade in summer and full sun in winter.

Planted: 2017

Height 1 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Spring

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Mostly slow release organic chook manure pellets, sometimes a regular fruit tree fert with higher N and K. Little and often

Could you describe the taste of the larger variety you are growing? Would you be willing to sell me some saved seeds to try growing in Adelaide please?

Self-seeds all over the place

Really amazing how nature gives them a insect protective covering-interesting to watch it dry out & become net-like with the yellow berry inside

Chooks love them

I find this plant likes it's manure and good watering. Too much water may make the fruit less tasty though.

Incredible root system that spreads wide and far!  Red spider mites love them - so hose under the leaves with a good jet of water - and grow in different spots around the garden each time....

Cape Gooseberry 10/10

Nette's Edible Fruits
Update: 5000 days 20hrs

Comments: -  Cape Gooseberries are so easy to grow. You just bury one of the fruits (you can probably grow them from cuttings too but I've never bothered) and water occasionally.  The require no maintenance at all, although you may need to cut the plants back because they grow so vigorously and you will get new plants self seeding from fallen fruit every year. The fruit are very attractive and fun to pick as the fruit grow individually inside paper lantern-like cases. When fresh the fruit resemble a cherry tomato and are very juicy with a sharp/sweet flavour, reminiscent of apricots. The fruit can also be left to dry on the bush (although many will fall when ripened before drying out). When dry the fruits a wrinkled and somewhat leathery with a much sweeter flavour. Kids love to pick and eat these.

Planted: 2010

Height 0.7 metres

Growing: In the Ground

First Fruited: 6 Months From Seed

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

When I Fertilise: Never

Pest Control:

Question:  I've been told that it can be harmful to eat unripe Cape Goosberry fruits. Do you know if this is true?
